The truth is, numerous companies will be shut down by authorities in the future due to non-compliant marketing and production techniques. We are taking a hard stance and continue to strengthen our compliant foundation, solidifying our permanent place in the industry. A recent study, by leading cannabis researchers BDS Analytics and Arcview Market Research, projects that the collective market for CBD sales in the U.S. will surpass $20 billion by 2024.

“Hempy 1st Anniversary” Florida! July 1st, 2020

๏ฟผ๏ฟผ

It is hard to believe that it has been only One Year since the full Legalization of CDB in the USA.

Depending on where you live, you may have started to see โ€œCBDโ€ products โ€“ capsules, tinctures, salves โ€“ pop up in your natural food stores or even at the supermarket. With all the misinformation out there, you may have questions about the health benefits of this non-psychotropic medicinal as well as its different forms and delivery methods. Understanding how CBD works and whatโ€™s available can steer you toward a product that works best for your individual needs.

Wide-Ranging Benefits

CBD, aka cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant, but unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and non-intoxicating, meaning thereโ€™s no โ€œhighโ€ associated with it, making it much more tolerable for a wider variety of people and the reason it has received so much attention as of late.

While the FDA does not allow companies to make health claims about CBD products, thereโ€™s enough anecdotal evidence to suggest it can be a very effective, natural medicine.

๏ฟผFor example, the Medical Board of Californiaโ€™s โ€œGuidelines for the Recommendation of Cannabis for Medical Purposesโ€ names medical conditions including cancer, anorexia, AIDโ€™s, chronic pain, spasticity, arthritis, and migraines as conditions that respond well to cannabis treatments.

So, why is CBD so effective in treating such a wide array of conditions? CBD acts as a regulator of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a communications system in the brain and body that plays a pivotal role in homeostasis. Homeostasis helps to regulate vital functions in the body like the immune, digestive, central nervous, and cardiovascular systems. The EC system, therefore, plays an important role in body functions like sleep, perception of pain, metabolism, cognition, and pleasure, and CBD helps modulate these functions. The list of conditions CBD may treat continues to grow, but the following have the most anecdotal evidence.

Sleep๏ฟผ

CBD improves the quality of sleep by helping people fall asleep and stay asleep. While itโ€™s been shown to assist with sleeping disorders like insomnia, it also alleviates the symptoms that disturb a good nightโ€™s sleep, such as stress, anxiety, and restlessness.

Pain Management

Because CBD is an anti-inflammatory, itโ€™s great for pain, especially with conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, cramps, and even gut-related disorders like colitis and Crohnโ€™s disease. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly reduced chronic inflammation and neuropathic pain in animals. If you have chronic pain, consider a regular CBD regimen as this will likely prove more effective than just taking it once in a while.

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

๏ฟผCBD calms the body and mind, alleviating stress and stress-related disorders, improving cognitive functions and mood, reducing anxiety (general, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder), trauma-related disorders like PTSD, and depression.

Neurological Conditions

There is strong scientific evidence that CBD effectively treats neurological conditions like Alzheimerโ€™s disease, Parkinsonโ€™s, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy. For example, well-known documented cases if CBD shows it reducing the severity and number of seizures in children who were previously unresponsive to anti-seizure medications. The CBD-heavy cannabis strain โ€œCharlotteโ€™s Webโ€ was created specifically for Charlotte Figi, who was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy that was causing her to have 300 grand mal seizures a week.

Cancer-Related Symptoms

This includes nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite associated with chemotherapy, as well as pain. Although more research needs to be conducted, CBD used in combination with chemotherapy could assist in combating cancer cells and suppressing cancer cell growth overall.

Hemp โ€“ vs. Cannabis-Extracted CBD

Depending on where you live, you have two CBD choices: CBD derived from hemp or CBD derived from THC.

๏ฟผCBD can be extracted from cannabis and hemp, and thereโ€™s a reason why that matters. If you were to see a cannabis plant and a hemp plant next to each other, youโ€™d be hard-pressed to tell the difference. They look the same because they come from the same plant species: Cannabis sativa. The difference is that in order for a plant to be classified as โ€œhemp,โ€ it has to be bred to contain very low levels of THC, the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis {i.e., what causes a โ€œhighโ€} โ€“ less than .3 percent to be exact. When CBD is derived from hemp, there are only minute traces of THC, whereas CBD that comes from cannabis can have larger amounts of THC present. If you are sensitive to THC or you donโ€™t want to experience possible psychoactive effects, youโ€™re better off sticking with hemp-derived CBD. But if youโ€™re not sensitive to a little THC, there are benefits to cannabis-derived CBD.

Hemp-Derived CBD

๏ฟผThe 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation of hemp, removing hemp and hemp-derived products from its former Schedule 1 status within the Controlled Substance Act, making CBD derived from hemp federally legal in the U.S. so that itโ€™s accessible to anyone that wants to try it.

At your local health food store, youโ€™ll typically find CBD oil, capsules, tinctures, salves, and edibles like chocolate. The dosage of these products varies, and where to start depends on your tolerance and ailment. Taking 10-25 mg of CBD is a great place to stat for newbies. If youโ€™re especially sensitive to medications you may wish to start at 5 โ€“ you may not feel the effects of the medicine, but it will provide a gauge for how your body will respond.

Once youโ€™ve experimented a bit with the options, you may wish to branch out. You can go online and search โ€œhemp-derived CBD productsโ€ and find a multitude of choices, but hereโ€™s where things get a bit tricky. While the FDA has regulatory authority over CBD, it has not established any definitive set of rules for the industry other than barring cannabidiol products from being sold as dietary supplements. As a result, there are serious quality control issues in the market at the moment. Products can be poorly labeled, have inconsistent quality and/or be overly processed, or they might contain toxins like pesticides, mold, and solvent residues. You will need to research reputable brands to find good-quality CBD.

๏ฟผLook for products that have been tested by a third-party lab, ensuring that the product is microbial, pesticide, and solvent-free. This includes all pages of the report, showing what you don’t want it to have. Buy CBD products made with organic, American-grown hemp or cannabis. Consumer Reports suggests looking for products made in states that have legalized the recreational and medical use of cannabis since they have more regulations and testing procedures in place.

Cannabis-Derived CBD

If you live in a state where recreational use is legal, you can try CBD products from a licensed dispensary. The same goes if you live in a state where medicinal use is legal and you have your medical marijuana card.

While CBD derived from hemp has only trace amounts of THC, CBD derived from cannabis will include various amounts. Some people prefer cannabis-derived CBD, as the two cannabinoids -CBD and THC โ€“ work very well together, creating whatโ€™s known as the โ€œentourage effect,โ€ where each enhances the therapeutic benefits of the other.

There are strains of cannabis bred specifically to be high in CBD and low in THC, including โ€˜ACDA,โ€™ โ€˜Cannatonic,โ€™ โ€˜Charlottes Web,โ€™ โ€˜Ringoโ€™s Gift,โ€™ โ€˜Sour Tsunami,โ€™ โ€˜Harlequin,โ€™ and โ€˜Hawaiian Dream.โ€™

With extracts like CBD oils and tinctures, you can find different ratios available. A ratio of 1:1 for example, means there are equal parts CBD to THC. If you donโ€™t want to be โ€œhighโ€ or prefer milder psychoactive effects from the THC, look for high CBD ratios like 15:1, 10:1, and 7:1. For some, having just a little THC enhances the overall benefits of CBD without any negative side effects.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil. (Not Hemp Oil)

Because CBD has only just been legalized, it will take a while for scientific research to back up mounting anecdotal evidence of its therapeutic profile and medicinal benefits, but you can be sure itโ€™s coming.

Isolate, Full Spectrum, and Broad Spectrum CBD

When shopping for CBD products, youโ€™ll find three choices that relate to the extraction process: isolate, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum.

โ—ฆ CBD isolate is more than 99 percent pure CBD โ€“ the CBD molecules are isolated from the other parts of a hemp or cannabis plant.

โ—ฆ Full Spectrum CBD also called โ€œwhole-plant formula,โ€ extracts CBD along with other beneficial phytocannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC as well as terpenes and flavonoids.

โ—ฆ Full Spectrum CBD (THC FREE) is like full spectrum but contains zero THC. A product such as that is like HempSMART. While CBD isolate is pure CBD, researchers believe that full and broad-spectrum extracts offer more therapeutic value, as theyโ€™re more bioavailable and activate more benefits.

โ€ข

10mg CBD Oil

Delivery and Dosage

How you choose to consume CBD depends on what you wish to treat, the effect you hope to achieve, how long you want it to last, and what feels the most comfortable and convenient for you. No โ€œdosing protocolโ€ or medical predictability exists, which makes dosing a bit tricky, so youโ€™ll have to do some experimentation. โ€˜Low and slowโ€ is key: start with a low dosage and take it slow. Although you cannot die from a cannabis overdose (thereโ€™s not a single documented case in the world), you can โ€œover doseโ€ yourself, resulting in symptoms like high anxiety and paranoia from intense psychoactive effects. Donโ€™t rush the process; start with 5-10 mg and go from there.

Smoking or Vaporizing Flower

โ€œFlowerโ€ refers to the trichome-covered part of a female cannabis plant. As mentioned, there are strains of cannabis bred specifically for high amounts of CBD and low THC. The benefit of smoking or vaporizing (“vapingโ€) flower is that the effect is felt almost immediately, making self-regulation of dosage fairly easy. If you have health issues and donโ€™t want to smoke, you can put flower into a vaporizer, an electronic device that heats dried flower to vapor. The issue with vaping is that the higher temperatures inhabit the full benefits of the plant.

CBD Oil Capsules

Also called โ€œcanna caps,โ€ these contain a concentrated extraction of CBD. Fast-acting because theyโ€™re so easy to metabolize, theyโ€™re also discreet and the dosage is easy to control. Read the label, but capsules typically work for 4-6 hours.

CBD Oil Tinctures

These are extracted from flower or plant matter using alcohol, oil, or vegetable glycerin. Dropped sublingually under the tongue, CBD absorbs immediately into the bloodstream. People like tinctures because theyโ€™re easy to control, discreet, and fast-acting.

๏ฟผBuyer Beware: A product labeled as โ€œhemp oilโ€ is not necessarily a CBD product. Read the label carefully to see how much CBD it contains. A product labeled โ€œhemp seed oilโ€ does not contain CBD naturally, unless it has been added.

CBD Infused Edibles

From chocolate to gummies to beverages, CBD edibles come in an incredible variety of forms. Edibles require a bit more time to take effect because the digestive system has to break them down, so depending on whatโ€™s already in your stomach and how fast your metabolism works, they may take anywhere from 1-3 hours to kick in, and the effect can last between 4-8 depending on the dosage. For this reason, more than any other delivery method, low and slow is the key with edibles. Start with no more than 10 mg and wait and see how you feel.

At the end of the day, our physiology is complex, so it will likely some trial and error to figure out what works for you. Consider keeping a journal, noting what you tried, the dosage, how long it took to kick in, how long it lasted, and how it made you feel โ€“ and whether it worked beneficially for your body.

CBD -Youโ€™re Guidebook to Growing Home Hemp 2021

With everyone on social isolation, businesses shutdown, and some mild uncertainty in the cannabis/hemp industry, what better time than now to work on your green thumb and start your own home-grow?

Growing Hemp during Staying Home Guide

Indoor or Outdoor? Now that the US has given us a guide on Hemp (see our post on the USDA) effective March 22, 2021. For those who would like to try their hand at Hemp, remember now we should follow the instruction of law. Aside from that, what is a good process to get going?ย

The very first thing youโ€™ll need to do is decide if you want to grow your plants inside or outside.

Of course, indoor grown CBD flowers will be of superior quality, but it takes more work and a larger initial investment.

Choosing to grow inside also depends largely on if you have enough space to pull it off. A nice sized closet would work, where you can hook up some lights and the plants will have enough room to grow both in height and width, but be mindful of your electric use outside the growroom, as your utility bills will go up significantly.

If you plan to grow outside, youโ€™ll want to get familiar with your gardening zone, this will help you determine when to plant your crop for best results. Gardening zones in the United States are listed as 1-9, with 1 being the coldest and 9 being the hottest. Typically, somewhere between zones 6 and 8 will be optimal, but you can grow quite a bit in zone 9 if you have an adequate watering source.

Florida Hemp

Some areas might not be suitable for growing CBD Flowers outside at all, so bear that in mind when doing your research. Another option thatโ€™s becoming increasing popular is growing CBD hemp flowers in a greenhouse. Greenhouses replicate the atmosphere of an indoor grow, to an extent, and will save you a lot of money in energy costs. They allow for year-round cultivation in a climate controlled environment where you can regulate the sunlight exposure as you wish.

If I were to choose an option, Iโ€™d personally go with the greenhouse.

Once youโ€™ve settled on where you want to grow your plants, youโ€™ll need to get everything set up. That starts with deciding what strain/s you want to grow. Cultivation methods for CBD hemp flowers can vary depending on the strain youโ€™re growing. Do you want a regular strain or an autoflowering strain? Indica, sativa, or hybrid?

Any specific strains you like better than others? Letโ€™s take a quick look at how each of these options might impact your grow-op or your final product.

Picking a Strain

Weโ€™ll start with regular strains vs autoflowering. With CBD flower plants, there are 2 main stages of the growing cycle: the vegetative stage and the flowering stage. The transition from one stage to the next requires changes in the plantโ€™s light cycle. When growing outside, youโ€™ll need to make sure you plant in the correct season, so your plants go into the vegetative stage when time โ€œsprings forwardโ€.

If youโ€™re growing inside, youโ€™ll need different colored light bulbs to replicate the changes. With autoflowering strains, well, they switch to the flowering stage automatically without any assistance from external light sources.

These strains are typically more user-friendly and would be ideal for the novice grower, but generally speaking, the quality of the buds is not quite as good as with regular strains.ย  The next step is to pick an actual strain.

Youโ€™ll need to decide if you want indica, sativa, or hybrid โ€“ although letโ€™s be honest, these days, nearly all strains are hybrids; but more on that another time. Also, do you want a specific CBD hemp flower strain or are you O.K. with something random and new? This is the easy part since it really all boils down to personal preference.

For the record, a few easy to grow strains are Blue Dream, Green Crack, and Harlequin.

Getting Set Up Seeds or Clones? Seeds have more options but much more difficult. Clones are easier to grow but can be harder to find and sketchy to transport depending on where you live.

If you choose to start from seed, the first thing you will need to do is get your plant sprouted. If youโ€™re buying good quality seeds from a trusted seedbank, you can go ahead and put the seeds straight into the soil and let them do their thing.

If you receive some seeds and want to test their viability before putting planting them directly, you can germinate the seed by putting in a damp paper towel, in a warm place with indirect sunlight.

I use a window where there is an overhang from the roof. Direct sunlight is often too strong for germinating seeds and even for young, barely sprouted plants.

Now when it comes to actual growing equipment, that will vary based on the growing method you choose (indoor, outdoor, soil, hydro, aeroponic, etc.), or the climate you live in if you choose to grow outdoors.ย

Industrial Hemp Farm

That said, here are a few basic itemsย you will likely need no matter where or how you plan on growing: Growing tent (with built in ventilation system) Lights (with different color and wattage bulbs to for the flower stage)

Soil, coco coir, or another planting medium, Filtration fixturesย

Timers, Thermometer, Hydrometerย  Pots and other basic gardening toolsย

You can get all of these items for about $500 to $750, again, depending on your geographic location as well as what exactly you need.

If youโ€™re growing inside, youโ€™ll need to account for the higher utility bills as well.

This all might sound a bit pricey, but keep in mind, this is just the initial investment.

In the long run, you will save money not having to buy flower and you will have much more control over the final product. After getting the initial items together, we are now ready to move forward and find that seed that will satisfy the government regulations and your foot in the soil.ย
