Inspirational Technologies presents the Hemp Story “MISUNDERSTOOD”

Inspirational Technologies presents the Hemp Story “MISUNDERSTOOD” – Read it and REAP then Weep (2025)

Be determined to help us make the planet a better place by supporting our mission to inform and educate the public about the many benefits ‘hemp’ once brought to our daily lives. Take the time to learn how hemp can contribute to positive changes in our future. We hope you’ll be inspired by hemp and the shared future we can create together. Thank you for your support. Steven M. Smith, Inspirational Technologies, dedicated to your health, wellness, and beauty since 2014. The following Hemp Story is rewritten from its’ original post in 2019.

Thank You for your continued support of Inspirationaltech.org

A forbidden fiber in the U.S. since 1970, hemp has taken the heat for almost five decades. Until the Farm Bill passed in December of 2018, hemp was federally illegal to grow for commercial purposes, making it risky for businesses to invest in a new crop that was incorrectly classified as a drug.   Imagine a sweater softer than any fabric you’ve ever felt before, and more durable than cotton. Imagine a car built with something lighter than steel that could stand 10 times the impact without denting.

Imagine if you could save four acres of trees by making paper with 1 acre of hemp. Imagine biodegradable Legos.

Now imagine all this possibility actually exists but you can’t enjoy any of it because people in power once decided the plant from which it’s all derived has a scorned cousin named “marijuana.”
If you can wrap your mind around this dereliction of logic, only then can you begin to understand the painfully silly policies America’s had in place that have kept hemp from coating our farmland with hues of pale yellow and light green. That longstanding logic has been costly for our country. United States’ hemp prohibition has suppressed potential jobs for farmers, products for consumers, and medicine for patients.

Cousin or not, the reality is, hemp can’t get you high just as near beer can’t get you drunk. Despite all that–and while near beer takes up three spots in every Walmart in America– hemp has been largely banned in the United States, until now.
To understand the differences between hemp and marijuana it’s critical to know what each distinctly different plant is capable of doing. The Ministry of Hemp offers the most comprehensive and easily digestible explanation of hemp versus marijuana. The 2018 Farm Bill: How we got here. Here’s what happened. Way back when, an angry and lobby-influenced Congress passed the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which effectively outlawed the possession of cannabis—including hemp—after hundreds of years of growth and use from the time of British colonization onward. While that law was repealed in the late 1960s, cannabis was quickly included as a Schedule 1 drug (the most “dangerous” class of drugs including heroin) in the Controlled Substances Act, a designation which continues to this day.

After 81 years, the 2018 Farm Bill represents the largest step towards undoing the racist and scientifically baseless legacy of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937.

The 2018 Farm Bill officially reclassifies hemp for commercial uses after decades of statutes and legal enforcement conflating hemp and marijuana, the Farm Bill distinguishes between the two by removing hemp from the Controlled Substances Act. (While the two are closely related, hemp lacks the high concentration of THC that is responsible for the high from smoking marijuana.) This would effectively move regulation and enforcement of the crop from the purview of the Drug Enforcement Agency to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The 2018 Farm Bill expands upon provisions in the 2014 version of the annual bill, which created Hemp Pilot Programs. These Hemp Pilot Programs “created a framework for the legal cultivation by states of ‘industrial hemp’ without a permit from the Drug Enforcement Administration.” The 2014 Hemp Pilot Programs were a success for farmers and consumers across the U.S., from Colorado to North Carolina.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell continues to be ardently anti-marijuana, despite the success of these programs and the fact that 62% of Americans say recreational marijuana should be legal. Nevertheless, McConnell and Senate Republicans read the political tea leaves and will now recognize the important differences between marijuana and hemp. In doing so, they’re creating an exciting time for entrepreneurs, CBD advocates, and farmers across the country. US previous administration trade wars were hurting farmers to the tune of billions of dollars. Wheat, soybean, and corn farmers have been targeted by China as the potent measure in its escalating tariff battle with the U.S. In 2017, China imported more than $24 billion in agriculture products from the U.S. The world’s top wheat consumer, China and purchased 1.6 million tons of U.S. wheat worth $391 million. At the same time, China bought $14 billion in soybeans for personal and animal consumption from the U.S. last year–more than any other agricultural commodity, and the country’s corn imports from the U.S. were worth $160 million.

All that’s changed with the high trade tariffs Trump’s levied on countries who import our products. Analysts and existing evidence suggest the soybean trade conflicts will be in favor of fellow exporters, Brazil and Argentina, rather than the U.S. The tariff could drop China’s imports of soybeans by 69% on average. The estimated effect of China’s 25% tariff on U.S. soybean imports would cut income for a midsize Illinois grain farm by an average of 87% over four years, prompting a loss of more than $500,000 in the farm’s net worth by 2021. It’s a messy situation. Trump needed a win, and farmers did too. Distinguishing between commercial hemp and marijuana, legalizing the former, is that much-needed reprieve. “We’re so pleased farmers across America now have the freedom to consider integrating this important crop into their production, particularly with the trade concerns around other crops such as soybeans, corn, and wheat,” said Elizabeth Hogan, VP of Brands at GCH Inc., the company behind Willie Nelson’s cannabis brands. Hemp legalization will transform it from niche interest and return it to cash crop status.

Using Hemp as Rotational Crop

Hemp is a farmer’s friend because compared with cotton, corn, and soybeans, it requires little water, isn’t picky when it comes to poor soil. It grows tightly spaced, thus crowding out weeds, and boasts a deep, soil-aerating root system. Despite all its advantages, and because growing it is illegal with the exception of limited licenses, the U.S. imports approximately $60 million worth of hemp from overseas countries like China. Political leverage This Farm Bill gave Trump Administration a powerful tool in their bargaining with China. As I wrote earlier this year in Forbes, China produces 50% of the world’s cannabis supply, with a large majority of that supply being the THC-lacking hemp variety; this gives China “massive economic potential” which “poses a threat to cannabis interests around the world and particularly in the U.S. market.”

Studies at Bejing’s Hemp Research Center revealed the variety of plant uses, prompting China to expand its hemp production which is a mere fraction of its world-leading cotton production. China not only has the product, but they have the cultivation techniques and commercial technologies to capitalize on that supply. And they are ramping up to leverage their competitive hemp advantage, expecting an eager demand from U.S. manufacturers given hemp’s rise in popular applications. By contrast, U.S. farmers grew merely 25,000 acres of hemp in the entire country in 2017. To give that context, that’s the same amount of land Bill Gates bought in Arizona to create a small, futuristic city.

That’s cool for a retirement project if you’re a billionaire, but hardly enough land to launch any sort of industry. And of that, about 70% of which was used to make CBD oil. Only recently have we seen an increase in manufacturers using hemp fibers to make fabrics, construction materials, health products, and other consumer goods.

With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, America will have a chance to counter China’s massive influence in the cannabis hemp industry. But it will mean playing catch-up for the foreseeable future. Currently, hemp cultivation techniques in America lag far behind other crops—it still has to be harvested by hand even. Even though marijuana is legal in China, the country has funded research into the plant and its cultivation, placing it miles ahead of other countries. The Farm Bill will help hemp farmers and entrepreneurs.

The 2018 Farm Bill will radically overhaul America’s relation to hemp and could unleash a hemp renaissance in the coming years that will close the gap between the U.S. and China. As a Schedule 1 substance alongside marijuana, hemp farmers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. have faced many barriers to doing business. Interstate commerce for hemp products was almost non-existent and financing was difficult to come by. But all that is set to change.

According to the American Agriculturist, the 2018 Farm Bill will allow hemp to be regulated by the USDA, including the labeling of American-grown hemp as certified organic; interstate hemp commerce will be legalized; financing and research opportunities will open up; hemp farmers will be guaranteed water rights; the definition of hemp will be altered to make it a non-drug commodity.

Hemp has hundreds of uses, many of which are yet to be discovered or fully realized thanks to the lack of available research funds. From textiles and plastics to livestock feed and home cooking, hemp has many applications that can reduce our dependence both on other countries and fossil fuels. Driven by explosive growth in hemp-based consumer products, the global hemp market is expected to jump to $10.6 billion by 2025.

Everything from our vodka to our cars is waiting to be reimagined in the future with legal hemp. Many people won’t even realize how much their lives are affected by cannabis-based products. One of the most exciting applications of hemp lies in the extracted cannabinoids or CBD oil. According to the Washington Post, “dozens of studies have found evidence that the compound can treat epilepsy as well as a range of other illnesses, including anxiety, schizophrenia, heart disease, and cancer.” With the legalization of hemp, CBD can be regulated and researched much more than before to truly understand the medical efficacy for a wide range of diseases.

“We continue to see great progress towards a new perspective on cannabis within the US. Within healthcare, several conditions and certain patient profiles rely heavily on CBD-only products of which the proposed Farm Bill will work to dramatically improve access to patients – not only in the US but globally,” said Prad Sekar, CEO of CB2 Insights in a written interview. All of those uses make hemp a profitable cash crop for suffering farmers, with some early commercial growers reporting $100 per-acre more profit on hemp than canola. Hemp grown for CBD oil, on the other hand, can take in $8,000 per acre versus $600 per acre for corn. In particular, hemp can be a boon for arid western states. According to Pacific Standard,

Hemp is thus profitable and sustainable, two words which have eluded many U.S. farmers as of late. Hemp cultivation could provide much-needed relief as farmers struggle to find markets for millions of bushels of crops during the trade wars. Now, instead of importing an estimated $100 million of hemp products every year, that money will go to American farmers and entrepreneurs.

Bruce Perlowin, CEO of Hemp, Inc, believes hemp legalization will drive disenfranchised farmers “back-to-the-land” now that they’ll have a solid economic basis in industrial hemp to rely on. “Our strategy has been to partner with farmers across the country in states where hemp cultivation and manufacturing is legal to provide them with the infrastructure needed to make a profit off this incredible crop, and this bill will be an incredible boon for the American small family farm,” Perlowin continued “The health and wellness industries are in for a major overhaul with the massive research and development and exploration into CBD‘s, CBGs, CBN’s and 113 other cannabinoids as well as some 300 terpenes found in the industrial hemp plant.”

What developments have occurred since the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill,

especially regarding how individual states are addressing issues related to CBD and Kratom?

Since the 2018 Farm Bill, states have rapidly evolved their regulations on CBD—especially hemp-derived intoxicants—

and are beginning to address Kratom with increasing scrutiny and legislative action.

🧪 CBD: From Wellness to Regulatory Whiplash
Federal Shift (2018–2025):
• The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp (≤0.3% delta-9 THC), opening the door for CBD products nationwide.
• However, it inadvertently created a loophole for intoxicating hemp derivatives like delta-8 THC, delta-10, and THCa, which are chemically altered but still derived from legal hemp.
• The FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement or food additive, leaving states to fill the regulatory vacuum.
State-Level Responses:
• Early years (2018–2022): Most states treated hemp-CBD as a wellness product, with minimal oversight.
• By 2023: Only 8 states had rules addressing intoxicating hemp derivatives.
• By mid-2025: Over 40 states now regulate or ban hemp-derived intoxicants. These laws include:
• Potency limits and age restrictions
• Licensing and testing requirements
• Labeling rules (QR codes, batch IDs, warnings)
• Bans on chemical conversion processes used to create synthetic cannabinoids
Examples:
• California allows CBD in foods/beverages but restricts intoxicating hemp.
• New York enforces age limits, serving caps, and QR-linked COAs.
• Texas permits food/supplement formats with strict labeling; smokable hemp is restricted.
• Indiana pioneered QR-code traceability and batch testing.

🌿 Kratom: A Rising Focus
While Kratom wasn’t addressed in the 2018 Farm Bill, its growing popularity has prompted state-level action:
• Some states (e.g., Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana) have banned Kratom outright due to concerns over addiction and safety.
• Others (e.g., Florida, Georgia, Utah) have passed Kratom Consumer Protection Acts, which regulate:
• Minimum age for purchase
• Labeling and purity standards
• Prohibitions on adulterated or synthetic Kratom
This patchwork reflects rising public health concerns and a push for consumer safety without federal oversight.

More than a Decade of Innovation: Inspirational Technologies (2013–2025)

 February 14, 2013, Inspirational Technologies

🌱 More than a Decade of Innovation: Inspirational Technologies (2013–2025)

Founded in 2013 by visionary entrepreneur Steven Smith, Inspirational Technologies emerged with a bold mission: to explore the intersection of natural wellness and cutting-edge science. From its humble beginnings to its current position as a thought leader in hemp-based innovation, the company’s journey has been marked by resilience, discovery, and a relentless pursuit of purpose.

🚀 2013–2015: Laying the Groundwork

Inspirational Technologies began as a small research-focused startup headquartered in Florida. Steven Smith, with a background in plant sciences and a passion for holistic health, envisioned a company that could bridge traditional botanical remedies with modern technology.

  • Initial Focus: The early years were dedicated to foundational research in plant-based compounds, particularly those found in hemp and other medicinal herbs.
  • Challenges: Regulatory uncertainty around cannabis-related research posed significant hurdles. Funding was limited, and public perception of hemp was still clouded by its association with marijuana.
  • Successes: Despite these obstacles, the company secured its first private investment in 2014 and launched its website, , as a hub for educational content and research updates.

Florida Hemp

🌿 2016–2018: Expanding into Hemp and Cannabinoids

As public interest in cannabidiol (CBD) began to surge, Inspirational Technologies pivoted toward deeper exploration of hemp-derived cannabinoids.

  • Research Milestones: The company initiated studies on CBD’s potential for anxiety, inflammation, and neuroprotection. Collaborations with academic institutions helped validate early findings.
  • Product Development: By 2017, Inspirational Technologies had developed prototypes for CBD-infused wellness products, including topical creams and tinctures.
  • Obstacles: The lack of federal clarity on hemp legality made distribution and marketing difficult. Several promising partnerships fell through due to legal concerns.
  • Breakthroughs: In 2018, as a subsidiary of a company that successfully patented a proprietary extraction method that preserved the full spectrum of cannabinoids while eliminating THC—a major step toward compliance and consumer safety was evolving.

🌾 2019: The Farm Bill Revolution

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which went into effect in early 2019, was a watershed moment for Inspirational Technologies and the hemp industry at large.

  • Legal Clarity: The bill federally legalized hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC), opening the floodgates for research, cultivation, and commerce.
  • Strategic Expansion: Inspirational Technologies quickly scaled operations, partnering with licensed hemp farms across the southeastern U.S. to ensure a steady supply of high-quality raw material.
  • New Ventures: The company launched its flagship product line—“Inspire Naturals”—featuring CBD oils, capsules, and skincare products. These were met with enthusiastic reception in wellness communities.
  • Educational Outreach: Steven Smith spearheaded a national campaign to educate consumers and healthcare providers about the differences between hemp-derived CBD and marijuana, emphasizing safety, efficacy, and legality.

May Day! May Day! Calling for All of Us to Unite, Protest and Pray.

100 Days are 100 ways to Be Prepared to Say, Enough was Enough.

They say, and I concur, that numbers don’t lie. When the truth is in the paper trail, one has to rely on the facts when they are authenticated and validated.

As a means to gauge the impact of the new administration and measure its effectiveness, we Americans look at the first 100 days into the Presidency for historic purposes and notable accomplishments or blunders:

For this writing we are going to use two different ways to create involvement. History and Advocacy are our primary sources for information and understanding about what we are going through and will continue to until understanding prevails.

May Day, day commemoratingthe historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement, observed in many countries on May 1. In the United States and Canada a similar observance, known as Labor Day, occurs on the first Monday of September.

null

In 1889 an international federation of socialist groups and trade unions designated May 1 as a day in support of workers, in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot in Chicago(1886). Five years later, U.S. Pres. Grover Cleveland, uneasy with the socialist origins of Workers’ Day, signed legislation to make Labor Day—already held in some states on the first Monday of September—the official U.S. holiday in honour of workers. Canada followed suit not long afterward.

In Europe May 1 was historically associated with rural pagan festivals (see May Day), but the original meaning of the day was gradually replaced by the modern association with the labour movement. In the Soviet Union, leaders embraced the new holiday, believing it would encourage workers in Europe and the United States to unite against capitalism. The day became a significant holiday in the Soviet Union and in the Eastern-bloc countries, with high-profile parades, including one in Moscow’s Red Squarepresided over by top government and Communist Party functionaries, celebrating the worker and showcasing Soviet military might. In Germany Labour Day became an official holiday in 1933 after the rise of the Nazi Party.

Ironically, Germany abolished free unions the day after establishing the holiday, virtually destroying the German labour movement.

On This Day: May 1Kurt Heintz of Encyclopædia Britannica explores the significance of May 1 as a labour holiday, a day traditionally used to celebrate the return of spring and much else.(more)

With the breakup of the Soviet Union and the fall of communist governments in eastern Europe in the late 20th century, large-scale May Day celebrations in that region declined in importance. In dozens of countries around the world, however, May Day has been recognized as a public holiday, and it continues to be celebrated with picnics and parties while serving as the occasion for demonstrations and rallies in support of workers.

On the other side of the current labor movement, signs of cracks in the economy have emerged that have made some economists nervous and frustrated that the government is overstepping their authority and not giving thought to their actions. Protests over this issue are growing and some analysts say that the administration will “hear from the people”. This is evidenced by this week’s May Day protests given by the free press and speech campaigns as follows.

Standing in Solidarity

A core principle behind our May Day actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

A future that works for working families

This is a war on working people—and we will not stand down. They’re defunding our schools, privatizing public services, attacking unions, and targeting immigrant families with fear and violence. Working people built this nation and we know how to take care of each other. We won’t back down—we will never stop fighting for our families and the rights and freedoms that propel opportunity and a better life for all Americans. Their time is up.

How You Can Help

Why Is Immigration and Due Process an Issue?

2 Recent Presidents, Obama and Trump, were not only the direct descendants of immigrants, but they have been notorious for deportation.

WE ARE THE MANY.

– This is a non partisan issue that has been a topic for many decades – Our United States democracy is based on allowing those seeking refuge in our country to be afforded the freedom to choose their own future. As did our recent 2 former Presidents. –

On October 7, 1885, Friedrich Trump, a 16-year-old German barber, bought a one-way ticket for America, escaping three years of compulsory German military service. He had been a sickly child, unsuited to hard labor, and feared the effects of the draft. It might have been illegal, but America didn’t care about this law-breaking—at that time, Germans were seen as highly desirable migrants—and Trump was welcomed with open arms. Less than two weeks later, he arrived in New York, where he would eventually make a small fortune. More than a century later, his grandson, Donald Trump, became the 45th president of Friedrich’s adopted home. But for decades, Trump denied this German heritage altogether, instead claiming that his grandfather’s roots lay further north, in Scandinavia. “[He] came here from Sweden as a child,” Trump asserted in his co-written book The Art of the Deal. In fact, his cousin and family historian John Walter told The New York Times, Trump maintained the ruse at the request of his own realtor father, Fred Trump, who had obfuscated his German ancestry to avoid upsetting Jewish friends and clients. “After the war,” Walter told the Times, “he’s still Swedish. [The lie] was just going, going, going.” Trump is the son, and grandson, of immigrants: German on his father’s side, and Scottish on his mother’s. None of his grandparents, and only one of his parents, was born in the United States or spoke English as their mother tongue. (His mother’s parents, from the remote Scottish Outer Hebrides, lived in a majority Gaelic-speaking community.)

Friedrich Trump came to the United States amid a flood of Germans—that year alone, an estimated 1 million made the journey to settle in America. It was, the Times reported, “the start of an adventurous life as a barber, restaurateur, saloonkeeper, hotelier, entrepreneur, gold rush prospector, shipwreck survivor and New York real-estate investor.” He married a woman from his German hometown, Kallstadt, where his parents had owned vineyards, and attempted to return home with his fortune.

But when his draft dodging came to the fore, the couple lost their Bavarian citizenship and were obliged to return to America for good. There, they had three children: Trump’s father, Fred, was the middle child. Born in the Bronx borough of New York City in 1905, Fred Trump was an all-American child who spoke no German. Later, he would become one of the city’s most successful young businessmen, amassing a fortune even as many around him slumped into financial ruin. In the mid-1930s, a young Fred Trump went to a party “dressed in a fine suit and sporting his trademark moustache.” Two Scottish sisters were at that same party in Queens: The younger one, Mary Anne MacLeod, was a domestic worker considering a return to her island homeland. “Something clicked between the maid and the mogul,” write Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher in their biography Trump Revealed. When Trump returned that night to the home he shared with his mother, the authors continued, he made an announcement: He had met the woman he planned to marry.

MacLeod might have been living in poverty in the United States, but her origins were even less palatable. She was the child of a fisherman and subsistence farmer, and the last in a family of 10 children born in the village of Tong on the Scottish Isle of Lewis. “It was not an easy existence,” reports Politico. This vast Gaelic-speaking family lived together in a modest gray pebble-dash house, “surrounded by a landscape of properties local historians and genealogists characterized with terms like ‘human wretchedness’ and ‘indescribably filthy.’” Married to Fred Trump, MacLeod lived a radically different life of fur -coats and 50-foot yachts. In 1942, she became an American citizen and returned only occasionally to her native Scotland, where her son now owns multiple properties. While Friedrich Trump had had moderate success in real estate, he died unexpectedly in a flu pandemic before his 50th birthday, and so did not live to see many of his projects come to fruition. At his death, his net worth was around $510,000 in present-day dollars. Under the Elizabeth Trump & Son moniker, Fred Trump and his mother Elizabeth continued this work, and turned it into a flourishing business. Trump’s international origins make him relatively unusual among American presidents. Of the last 10 presidents, only two—Trump and Barack Obama—have had a parent born outside of the United States. Trump’s own immediate family has been similarly international: Two of his three wives were naturalized American citizens, originally from the Czech Republic and Slovenia. Only one of his five children, Tiffany, is the child of two American-born citizens, while his daughter, Ivanka, is the first Jewish member of the First Family in American history. But so far as his biographers have been able to tell, none of his international roots extends to Sweden.

Happy 420 — Origins, Laws, and the Moment We’re In

1. The Origin Story: How 420 Became a Cultural Signal

420 began as a simple meeting time among a group of California high‑schoolers in 1971 — the Waldos — who used “4:20” as a code for gathering after school. What started as an inside joke traveled through music culture, especially Grateful Dead circles, and eventually became a universal shorthand for cannabis itself.

Over the decades, 4:20 p.m. became a daily ritual, and April 20th evolved into a cultural holiday — part celebration, part protest, part community gathering. The beauty of 420 is that it was never created by a corporation, a government, or a marketing team. It grew organically, carried by people who believed in freedom, curiosity, and connection.

That’s why the origin still matters. It reminds us that cannabis culture was built from the ground up — by people, not institutions.

2. The Current Landscape: State Laws in 2026

The United States now lives in a patchwork reality:

  • Medical cannabis is legal in the majority of states, including Florida, where the program continues to expand in patient count and product availability.
  • Adult‑use legalization has passed in many states, but not all — and the rules vary dramatically.
  • Federal law still classifies cannabis as illegal, creating contradictions in banking, research, interstate commerce, and patient access.
  • Hemp remains federally legal, but states continue to tighten rules around intoxicating hemp derivatives.

This patchwork creates confusion for patients, consumers, businesses, and law enforcement. It also creates opportunity — because every year, more states move toward reform, and public support continues to grow.

Even in states without adult‑use legalization, medical programs like Florida’s show that regulated access can coexist with safety, oversight, and economic benefit.

3. The Political Climate: Optimism with Realism

The political climate around cannabis in 2026 is defined by momentum, contradiction, and public demand outpacing policy.

Here’s what’s shaping the moment:

  • Public support for legalization remains high, across party lines, according to multiple national polls.
  • Congress continues to debate reform, including banking protections and rescheduling proposals, but progress is slow.
  • States are acting faster than the federal government, creating a widening gap between state policy and federal law.
  • Courts and regulators are increasingly involved in defining the boundaries of hemp, THC limits, and product safety.
  • Advocacy groups continue to push for expungement, patient rights, and equitable access.

Optimism is justified — the direction of travel is clear — but realism is necessary. Reform is happening, but not at the pace many expected. The next breakthroughs will likely come from a combination of state‑level action, federal administrative changes, and continued public pressure.

Commentary by Steven Smith

Advocate for Cannabis Reform, Founder of Inspirational Technologies & PAiNT Research

“I’ve always believed that cannabis reform is ultimately about people — patients, veterans, families, and communities who deserve access, safety, and honesty. I’m optimistic, but I’m also realistic. I’ve seen how slow the system can move, how politics can stall progress, and how misinformation can cloud public understanding. But I’ve also seen something stronger: the steady rise of informed citizens who refuse to let outdated laws define their lives.”

“The future of cannabis is not just about legalization — it’s about education, research, and responsible access. Vaporizers, for example, represent a safer, more controlled way for many people to consume. They reduce combustion‑related harms and allow for precise dosing. As technology improves, so will safety, consistency, and patient confidence.”

“420 is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder. A reminder that reform is unfinished. A reminder that millions still lack access. A reminder that science must guide policy, not stigma. And a reminder that the culture that created 420 — grassroots, hopeful, human — is still alive.”

“And yes — it’s 4:20 somewhere. In fact, it’s 4:20 forty‑eight times a day around the world. That’s forty‑eight reminders that progress continues, that community matters, and that the future is brighter than the past.”

Closing Thought

Two days before 420, the message is simple:
Honor the origin. Understand the laws. Stay engaged in the political moment. Celebrate responsibly. And keep pushing for a future where cannabis policy reflects science, compassion, and common sense.

🌿 CANNABIS LAWS BY STATE ( 2026)

Cannabis policy in the United States has evolved dramatically since California first recognized medical cannabis in 1996. Three decades later, the national landscape is a patchwork of adult‑use legalization, medical programs, decriminalization reforms, and a shrinking number of prohibition states.

As of 2026, most Americans live in a state where cannabis is legal in some form. Federal law still classifies cannabis as illegal, but state‑level reforms continue to expand, and public support for legalization remains at historic highs.

Below is the updated 2026 state-by-state breakdown.

📌 Closing

The national trend remains clear: more states are moving toward regulated adult-use markets, and medical access is now the norm across most of the country. While federal reform remains stalled, state-level legalization continues to expand, driven by voter initiatives, legislative action, and shifting public opinion.

How Do States Decide on Their Cannabis Laws?

For decades, states have been changing their cannabis laws through both ballot initiatives and the legislative process. In states including California, South Dakota and New Jersey, voters have directly approved measures legalizing medical cannabis, recreational cannabis or both.

State legislatures have been passing laws to allow medical cannabis since the 1990s. In 2018, Vermont became the first state to legalize recreational cannabis through its legislature rather than through a ballot initiative. Since then, legislatures in states including Illinois and Virginia have followed suit.

A state’s cannabis laws don’t address every detail of how its system works. Instead, the law creates a framework within which state agencies and local governments can make more specific rules.

What Is Medical Cannabis?

Medical cannabis, as the name suggests, is prescribed by a doctor to treat specific conditions and symptoms. Studies have shown that cannabis can help patients with a variety of health concerns, including:

  • Certain kinds of epilepsy.
  • Nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy treatments for cancer.
  • The loss of appetite and weight loss that can be caused by HIV/AIDS.

Scientists continue to study whether cannabis is an effective treatment for some symptoms of multiple sclerosis, chronic pain and other conditions.

How Do States Regulate Medical Cannabis?

Each state’s medical cannabis program is unique, but they share important similarities.

How Do States Regulate Medical Cannabis

A physician will examine a patient and, if appropriate, provide a certification that the patient has a condition that can be treated with medical cannabis. Each state has its own list of qualifying conditions.

Once a patient has a physician’s certification, they can be placed on the state’s medical cannabis registry and issued an identification card. This card entitles them to purchase cannabis at a dispensary — a state-regulated store that is authorized to sell cannabis products. The amount of cannabis someone with a medical cannabis card can possess varies by state.

Another important difference between states is whether they recognize other states’ medical cannabis cards. Individuals must follow the rules of the state they are in, not just the state that issued their ID.

What Is Cannabis Decriminalization?

In addition to implementing and refining medical cannabis programs, states are also continuing to address the question of how to regulate the nonmedical use and possession of cannabis. As the map shows, many states now allow adults to possess and use cannabis with some restrictions. Others have opted instead for decriminalization.

Decriminalization of cannabis does not mean legalization of cannabis. Instead, decriminalization can reduce the legal consequences of those caught possessing or using cannabis.

Decriminalization generally means criminal penalties are replaced with civil penalties. For example, police would issue a citation instead of making an arrest, would not punish an individual with a jail or prison sentence, and the incident would not appear on the individual’s criminal record.

It’s important to note that these more lenient punishments generally only apply to the first-time possession of smaller amounts of cannabis — harsher penalties can be imposed for multiple infractions or for possessing larger amounts.

What Is CBD?

The Cannabis sativa plant contains both delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the chemical compound found in medical and recreational cannabis — and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is psychoactive — it’s the chemical in cannabis that causes a “high.” CBD is not psychoactive. For this reason, many states have begun loosening restrictions on its use for medicinal and other purposes.

At both the state and federal levels, however, the law surrounding CBD remains complicated and unsettled. This is especially true when it comes to the presence of THC in CBD products. Since the two compounds are chemically similar and derived from the same plant, many CBD products contain some THC. Some states that allow CBD products but have more restrictive laws for THC have specified that CBD products may not contain more than a certain small amount of THC.

By isolating and extracting the CBD from Cannabis sativa plants, it is possible to create CBD-only products. Since these products contain no THC at all, they reduce some of the risk and uncertainty surrounding the production, sale and use of CBD.
