Of Our last 10 Presidents, only Two—Trump and Barack Obama—have had a parent born outside of the United States.

– This is a non partisan issue that has been a topic for many decades – Our United States democracy is based on allowing those seeking refuge in our country to be afforded the freedom to choose their own future. As did our recent 2 former Presidents. –

On October 7, 1885, Friedrich Trump, a 16-year-old German barber, bought a one-way ticket for America, escaping three years of compulsory German military service. He had been a sickly child, unsuited to hard labor, and feared the effects of the draft. It might have been illegal, but America didn’t care about this law-breaking—at that time, Germans were seen as highly desirable migrants—and Trump was welcomed with open arms. Less than two weeks later, he arrived in New York, where he would eventually make a small fortune. More than a century later, his grandson, Donald Trump, became the 45th president of Friedrich’s adopted home. But for decades, Trump denied this German heritage altogether, instead claiming that his grandfather’s roots lay further north, in Scandinavia. “[He] came here from Sweden as a child,” Trump asserted in his co-written book The Art of the Deal. In fact, his cousin and family historian John Walter told The New York Times, Trump maintained the ruse at the request of his own realtor father, Fred Trump, who had obfuscated his German ancestry to avoid upsetting Jewish friends and clients. “After the war,” Walter told the Times, “he’s still Swedish. [The lie] was just going, going, going.” Trump is the son, and grandson, of immigrants: German on his father’s side, and Scottish on his mother’s. None of his grandparents, and only one of his parents, was born in the United States or spoke English as their mother tongue. (His mother’s parents, from the remote Scottish Outer Hebrides, lived in a majority Gaelic-speaking community.)

Friedrich Trump came to the United States amid a flood of Germans—that year alone, an estimated 1 million made the journey to settle in America. It was, the Times reported, “the start of an adventurous life as a barber, restaurateur, saloonkeeper, hotelier, entrepreneur, gold rush prospector, shipwreck survivor and New York real-estate investor.” He married a woman from his German hometown, Kallstadt, where his parents had owned vineyards, and attempted to return home with his fortune. But when his draft dodging came to the fore, the couple lost their Bavarian citizenship and were obliged to return to America for good. There, they had three children: Trump’s father, Fred, was the middle child. Born in the Bronx borough of New York City in 1905, Fred Trump was an all-American child who spoke no German. Later, he would become one of the city’s most successful young businessmen, amassing a fortune even as many around him slumped into financial ruin. In the mid-1930s, a young Fred Trump went to a party “dressed in a fine suit and sporting his trademark moustache.” Two Scottish sisters were at that same party in Queens: The younger one, Mary Anne MacLeod, was a domestic worker considering a return to her island homeland. “Something clicked between the maid and the mogul,” write Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher in their biography Trump Revealed. When Trump returned that night to the home he shared with his mother, the authors continued, he made an announcement: He had met the woman he planned to marry.

MacLeod might have been living in poverty in the United States, but her origins were even less palatable. She was the child of a fisherman and subsistence farmer, and the last in a family of 10 children born in the village of Tong on the Scottish Isle of Lewis. “It was not an easy existence,” reports Politico. This vast Gaelic-speaking family lived together in a modest gray pebble-dash house, “surrounded by a landscape of properties local historians and genealogists characterized with terms like ‘human wretchedness’ and ‘indescribably filthy.’” Married to Fred Trump, MacLeod lived a radically different life of fur -coats and 50-foot yachts. In 1942, she became an American citizen and returned only occasionally to her native Scotland, where her son now owns multiple properties. While Friedrich Trump had had moderate success in real estate, he died unexpectedly in a flu pandemic before his 50th birthday, and so did not live to see many of his projects come to fruition. At his death, his net worth was around $510,000 in present-day dollars. Under the Elizabeth Trump & Son moniker, Fred Trump and his mother Elizabeth continued this work, and turned it into a flourishing business. Trump’s international origins make him relatively unusual among American presidents. Of the last 10 presidents, only two—Trump and Barack Obama—have had a parent born outside of the United States. Trump’s own immediate family has been similarly international: Two of his three wives were naturalized American citizens, originally from the Czech Republic and Slovenia. Only one of his five children, Tiffany, is the child of two American-born citizens, while his daughter, Ivanka, is the first Jewish member of the First Family in American history. But so far as his biographers have been able to tell, none of his international roots extends to Sweden.

Twitter announced Wednesday that they will be allowing legal cannabis companies in the United States to promote cannabis products with paid advertising on their platform. The announcement marks an important shift, as most social media platforms specifically ban content related to the federally illegal substance. A few smaller social media platforms have allowed for cannabis advertising in the past, such as Social Club, a platform designed specifically for the cannabis community. Still, Twitter is the first large and already established social media platform to buck this trend, laying out specific rules for how the legal cannabis industry can participate in advertising.

While cannabis remains federally illegal in the United States, the majority of states have approved some type of legal cannabis sales within their borders. 37 states have medical cannabis programs and 21 allow for recreational cannabis use. This leaves cannabis companies operating within their state’s laws mostly shut out of paid social media marketing – despite the fact that they are compliant with state laws.

Historically, many in the cannabis industry have ignored these rules, or tried to find ways to avoid detection. But even with these attempts, cannabis brands frequently have their posts, or even profiles, taken down. Twitter seems to have an especially active cannabis community. Some estimates suggest Twitter saw over 20 million tweets about cannabis in the last year alone. The new policy could draw even more cannabis brands and consumers to the platform, given the lack of competition for cannabis advertisements on other major social media platforms. Popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok all still ban content related to the medicinal plant.

Twitter’s announcement was lauded by many in the cannabis industry, who have hoped to see changes in social media policies reflect the fact that cannabis is legal for more than half the states in the country. “This is a welcome and overdue moment for the industry” commented Ashley Fields, SVP of Marketing and Communications for Cann, a cannabis beverage brand. “Advertising plays a significant role in our culture and Twitter’s announcement shows behaviors and conversations are trending in favor of normalization, legalization and frankly, “substance equality” reflecting where cannabis vs alcohol can advertise.”

  • 1937: The Marihuana Tax Act is enacted, effectively prohibiting cannabis at the federal level. Although medical use is still permitted, new fees and regulatory requirements significantly curtail its use.[1]
  • 1969: The Marihuana Tax Act is struck down in the case Leary v. United States. The Supreme Court rules that the act violates the Fifth Amendment’s protection against self-incrimination.[2]
  • 1970: The Controlled Substances Act is enacted. Cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug, determined to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, thereby prohibiting its use for any purpose.[3]
  • 1990: The Solomon–Lautenberg amendment is enacted.[4] As a result, many states pass “Smoke a joint, lose your license” laws under which any drug offense is punished with a mandatory six month driver’s license suspension.[5][6]
  • 2014: The Rohrabacher–Farr amendment passes the U.S. House and is signed into law. Requiring annual renewal, it prohibits the Justice Department from interfering with the implementation of state medical cannabis laws.[7][8] The Cole Memorandum had in 2013 assigned similar policies from within the Justice Department.[9][10]
  • 2018: The 2018 farm bill legalizes low-THC (less than 0.3% THC) hemp and hemp-derived products such as cannabidiol (CBD) at the federal level. The bill also fully removed or “descheduled” low-THC cannabis products from the Controlled Substances Act, where they had been listed as Schedule I drugs since the CSA’s inception in 1970.[3][11]
  • 2022: The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act is signed into law to allow cannabis to be more easily researched for medical purposes. It is the first standalone cannabis reform bill enacted at the federal level.[12][13]

Prohibition begins – 1911

  • 1911: Massachusetts requires a prescription for sales of Indian hemp.[14]
  • 1913: California, Maine, Wyoming, and Indiana ban marijuana.[14]
  • 1915: Utah and Vermont ban marijuana.[14]
  • 1917: Colorado legislators make the use and cultivation of cannabis a misdemeanor.
  • 1923: Iowa, Oregon, Washington, and Vermont ban marijuana.[14]
  • 1927: New York,[14] Idaho, Kansas, Montana, and Nebraska ban marijuana.[15]
  • 1931: Illinois bans marijuana.[16]
  • 1931: Texas declares cannabis a narcotic, allowing up to life sentences for possession.[17]

Decriminalization begins – 1973

  • 1973: Texas law is amended to declare possession of four ounces or less a misdemeanor.[17][19]
  • 1973: Oregon becomes the first state to decriminalize cannabis – reducing the penalty for up to one ounce to a $100 fine.[20]
  • 1975: Alaska, Maine, Colorado, California, and Ohio decriminalize cannabis.[20]
  • 1975: Alaska’s Supreme Court establishes that the right to privacy includes possession of small amounts of marijuana.[21]
  • 1976: Minnesota decriminalizes cannabis.[20]
  • 1977: Mississippi, New York, and North Carolina decriminalize cannabis.[20] South Dakota also decriminalizes cannabis, but the law is repealed almost immediately afterwards.[22]
  • 1978: Nebraska decriminalizes cannabis.[20] No other state would decriminalize until 2001.
  • 1978: New Mexico passes the Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act, becoming the first state to enact legislation recognizing the medical value of marijuana.[23]
  • 1979: Virginia passes legislation allowing doctors to recommend cannabis for glaucoma or the side effects of chemotherapy.[24][25]
  • 1982: Alaska passes legislation to further decrease penalties for cannabis.[26]
  • 1990: Alaska recriminalizes cannabis by voter initiative, restoring criminal penalties for possession of any amount of cannabis.[27]

Medical cannabis begins – 1996

  • 1996: California becomes the first state to legalize medical cannabis with the approval of Proposition 215.[28] Arizona also passes a medical cannabis ballot measure, but it is rendered ineffective on a technicality.[29]
  • 1998: Oregon, Alaska, and Washington all legalize medical cannabis through ballot measure.[30] Nevada also passes a medical cannabis initiative, but it requires second approval in 2000 to become law, as per the state constitution.[31]
  • 1999: Maine legalizes medical cannabis through ballot measure.[30]
  • 2000: Hawaii becomes the first state to legalize medical cannabis through state legislature.[32]
  • 2000: Nevada and Colorado legalize medical cannabis through ballot measure.[30]
  • 2001: Nevada decriminalizes cannabis through state legislature.[33]
  • 2003: Maryland passes legislation establishing reduced penalties for persons using cannabis due to a medical necessity (as established at trial).[34]
  • 2004: Vermont legalizes medical cannabis through state legislature.[35]
  • 2004: Montana legalizes medical cannabis through ballot measure.
  • 2006: Rhode Island legalizes medical cannabis through state legislature.[36]

Hemp Used as Livestock Feed Unlocks More Potential for the Cash Crop

 

Using Hemp As A Rotational Crop

Recent reports on the benefits of using hemp as livestock feed and how it can unlock more opportunities as this cash crop continues to flourish at an exponential rate. After almost being entirely eliminated from the American landscape in the 1950s, Congress finally made it legal in 2018 to grow hemp in America again.

Recognizing that not all cannabis plants were bred to have high concentrations of THC allows for segments of the agricultural sector to cash in on the hemp crop too.

While hemp is primarily grown to produce seed, fiber, medicine and oil (and has thousands of uses), the byproducts that remain after harvest could serve as feed for animals.

This may include leaves, fodder and residual plant fibers. Since these byproducts are predominantly “cellulose-containing plant materials” the best type of animals to utilize these byproducts are ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, deer, elk, giraffes and camels) because of their unique digestive system.

This opens the door for segments of the agricultural industry to take advantage of opportunities in the hemp market by using hemp as animal feed.

While the 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to grow hemp, feed ingredients, including hemp, fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA (Food & Drug Administration), thus hemp growers are still petitioning the government to approve the plant as livestock feed.

Hemp Feed Coalition

According to the VP of the Hemp Feed Coalition, “large scale hemp production will create inexpensive byproducts that are valuable as animal feed ingredients. Hemp seed meal provides high values of nutrition, such as complete protein, omega-3 and mega-6 fatty acids.” (Source reveals) To realize these benefits, the Hemp Feed Coalition is working to gain federal approval for hemp and its byproducts as an animal feed ingredient. In an article published a few months ago, “prior to prohibition in 1937, wild hemp grew freely across North America and was a natural part of the diet of all grass-grazing animals, including cows, goats, sheep and bison.

Even pasture-raised chickens pecked at the plants, which means CBD, small amounts of THC and all the other cannabinoids we’ve since discovered were also a natural part of the human diet, via meat, milk and eggs.”

Hemp Industry Daily says the animal-feed ingredient approval process typically takes up to four years, but FDA authorities have promised to fast-track it, reducing the process to 1-2 years.

As of today, hemp as a feed ingredient, is not approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) or the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Approval from these entities would unlock more opportunities of what the cash crop has to offer. Industrial hemp has nearly unlimited potential and the surface of that potential has only been scratched. Much more remains to be discovered about the possible uses of the robust, multi-purpose substance.

Federal legislation in favor of hemp and many state approvals across the country, have been a boon to the industry.

And with immense profits to be made, there is no doubt that companies in the industry, will benefit from it.

The number of consumer products made from hemp is already mind-boggling. From personal care items to fuel, the list seems to be endless.
