Hemp, Nature’s “wonder crop” is in the spotlight again during the USDA Secretary’s recent tour of Lincoln University’s Dickinson Research Facility.

Las Vegas, NV, Feb. 15, 2022 Hemp, Nature’s “wonder crop” is in the spotlight again during the USDA Secretary’s recent tour of Lincoln University’s Dickinson Research Facility. reports today that hemp’s role in sustainable agriculture has garnered the attention of USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, as he recently announced that $1 billion in grants will be offered by the federal government to support climate-friendly farming when he toured the facility that studies agriculture.

According to the news source, grants under this program are intended to “engage agriculture, forestry and rural communities in the nation’s fight against climate change” and bolster sustainable agriculture.

What’s more climate-friendly than hemp? Environmentalists believe this “wonder crop” has the potential to make huge strides in the regenerative agriculture movement. Let’s take a look at why they believe that and how industrial hemp farming projects could see some of that $1 billion in grant money. First, hemp can improve soil health. It can be cultivated in almost any environment across the country regardless of the climate and generate high yields with a short 120-day harvest cycle (ideal for crop rotation).

Weed or wonder crop? How hemp harvests could transform the farming landscape

The self-sustaining Smartbox processes the hemp plant into high-value hemp seed oil that can be used as a biodiesel (some of which can fuel the Smartbox’s own generator), fuel pellets or livestock bedding, and hemp seed cake.

“As a cover crop, hemp restores degraded soil by blocking out the room for weeds – reducing the need for synthetic herbicides and adding diversity to crop rotations.” After harvest, hemp leaves behind biomass that can be “up-cycled into added-value products or returned to the soil, feeding essential nutrients back into the ground.”

Second, hemp supports bioremediation.

Bioremediation is when you use living things to heal and cleanse soil after years of toxic build-up. Hemp has a deep root structure and guards against weeds, naturally preparing the soil for rotation. One can liken hemp’s root structure to a vacuum cleaner – accumulating heavy metals and other toxins from the soil before it enters surrounding groundwater.

Third, hemp grows faster than trees and can “sequester large quantities of carbon dioxide back into the ground.”

Hemp is “a zero-carbon energy source with applications in biofuel.” In fact, scientists estimate that “for every ton of hemp cultivated, 1.63 tons of CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.” (Source) Overall, hemp, as the industry continues to mature, has the power to “lower the ecological impacts of food, fuel and fiber production, empower small-scale farmers and create jobs in a variety of industries.”

But while we praise this wonder crop, we have to remember a total hemp-based economy doesn’t automatically equate to a greener future. Yes, the industry is maturing but it’s up to the farmers to ensure that it’s grown in a way that heals the land, not destroy it like conventional commodity crops which erodes soil and externalizes pollution.

The Climate 21 Project (the funding program that’s part of a broader initiative) under the Biden administration outlines the steps the USDA can take to encourage farmers, ranchers and landowners to take up practices that scientists believe can help reduce atmospheric carbon. It “taps the expertise of more than 150 experts with high-level government experience to deliver actionable advice for a rapid-start, whole-of-government climate response coordinated by the White House” and accountable to President Biden.

The Hemp Inc Company projects that it may be eligible to receive some of the $1 billion funding must “demonstrate climate-smart production practices, activities and systems on working lands; verify the carbon and greenhouse-gas benefits associated with those practices; and work to develop markets and promote their climate-smart commodities.”

The grants are available to local, county, tribal and state governments, small businesses and for-profit organizations, nonprofits and universities. Applications are being accepted for projects between $5 million to $100 million through April 8th but the deadline for pilot projects up to $250,000 is May 27th.

Trulieve has completed the acquisition of an Operational 64,000 sq. ft. Cultivation Facility in Phoenix and Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Recreational Cannabis Sales in Arizona

The new cultivation facility immediately improves supply chain capacity and becomes Trulieve’s fifth cultivation facility in Arizona, supporting Trulieve’s 17 dispensaries in the state of Arizona with flower for medical patients and adult-use customers. Mississippi Becomes 37th State to Legalize Medical Marijuana Mississippi joined 36 other U.S. states in legalizing marijuana for medical use on Wednesday, as the governor signed legislation permitting cannabis for treatment of severe, debilitating health conditions such as cancer, AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease.

Announcing enactment of the bill, Governor Tate Reeves said the final version passed last week by the Republican-controlled legislature was designed to curb recreational marijuana use, such as by allowing patients to obtain no more than 3 ounces of cannabis per month, or 3.5 grams a day. Reeves, a first-term Republican, said that limit alone would result in “hundreds of millions of fewer joints on the streets” compared with the original, more permissive version of the bill. The new law becomes effective immediately. Under it, an individual can legally obtain medical marijuana only if diagnosed with one of approximately two dozen qualifying conditions, including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder and severe injury. The measure also permits cannabis to be prescribed for any “pain state in which the cause of the pain cannot be removed or otherwise treated … and which no relief or cure of the cause of the pain is possible.” Written certification must be provided by a licensed healthcare professional with whom patients have a bona fide relationship, and the bill requires an in-person office visit to obtain one.

Only a physician can prescribe for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, and parental consent is also required for minors. Mississippi voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to establish a medical cannabis program in November 2020, but it was later invalidated when the state Supreme Court struck down the state’s entire ballot initiative process. According to the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), Mississippi becomes the 37th of 50 states to allow some form of medical marijuana program, even though cannabis remains classified as an illegal narcotic under U.S. federal law. As of November, 18 states and the District of Columbia have enacted measures to regulate cannabis for non-medical use by adults, the NCSL said.

The new law prohibits the state from providing economic development incentives for the cannabis industry. The state often provides tax breaks and financial assistance for roads or water access to industrial sites. The law gives cities and counties 90 days to opt out of allowing medical marijuana facilities, for growing or selling. But people in those communities could petition for an election to overrule local officials’ decisions and allow them. Clint Patterson is chief executive officer of Mockingbird Cannabis, which plans to operate in the state. He said cannabis products can alleviate pain and suffering. “We look forward to serving the citizens of Mississippi as they seek to improve their health and quality of life through responsible cannabis use,” Patterson said in a statement.

U.S. Senate Candidate Gary Chambers Jr. Smokes Cannabis in New Campaign.

“I hope this ad works to not only destigmatize the use of marijuana, but also forces a new conversation that creates the pathway to legalize this beneficial drug and forgive those who were arrested due to outdated ideology,” said Gary Chambers Jr., a progressive activist, finished third in a special election primary race to fill former Congressman Cedric Richmond’s seat last year. He is running to challenge

Republican Senator John Kennedy. Chambers, who is Black, opens the advertisement, titled “37 seconds,” with an image of him lighting a blunt and smoking it.

“Every 37 seconds someone is arrested for possession of marijuana,” Chambers said in the video. “Black people are four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana laws than white people,” Chambers said. “States waste $3.7 billion enforcing marijuana laws every year. Most of the people police are arresting aren’t dealers, but rather people with small amounts of pot, just like me.”

Eighteen states and Washington, D.C. have legalized small amounts of marijuana for recreational use, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Twenty-seven states have decriminalized possessing small amounts of marijuana. Louisiana enacted a law in 2021 that decriminalizes possession of up to 14 grams of marijuana. Those who are caught will face a fine of up to $100 but no jail time. In August, New Orleans pardoned about 10,000 people with convictions or pending penalties for small amounts of marijuana possession. “

We must move toward criminal justice reform regarding marijuana arrests by pushing away the stigma and being real,” Chambers said in a statement t

o CBS News. “Some parts of the country are fighting opioid addictions and creating millionaires and better schools from the marijuana industry. Others are creating felonies and destroyed families. I can’t stand for that.” According to the ACLU, national arrest rates for marijuana possession were down from 2010 to 2018, but Black people were 3.6 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people in 2018. States that legalized marijuana had lower rates of racial disparities in marijuana possession arrests. A majority of Americans, 60%, have said that marijuana should be legal for recr eational and medical use according to an April 2021 Pew Research survey. Another 30% of respondents said it should be legal only for medical use, while 8% said it should not be legal for any reason.

Gary Chambers Jr. picked up his first significant endorsement in an uphill U.S. Senate campaign when outgoing state Rep. Ted James announced his support Thursday.

James’ backing comes at a time when Chambers is trying to establish himself as a credible candidate, days after Chambers surprised observers by posting an ad online that showed him boldly smoking marijuana.

“I was shocked when I saw it. Politicians don’t usually do that. He’s definitely started some real conversations,” said James who just stepped down as chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus. Louisiana Republican U.S. Sen. John Kennedy is amassing a massive campaign fund war chest for his 2022 re-election bid, announcing he has $11 million in the bank for the race.

Kennedy’s report came a day after Baton Rouge community activist Gary Chambers Jr. joined fellow Democrat Luke Mixon, a retired Navy pilot, in the race.

“As Louisianans begin a new year, I’m again humbled by the support they’ve shown throughout 2021,” Kennedy said in a press release. “I’ll keep fighting for Louisianans and their families like I always have and will continue to proudly be their voice against all the madness in Washington.”

A University of New Orleans poll, also from April 2021, found Louisiana residents favor legalizing recreational use of marijuana 5

5%-36%. Louisiana has a Democratic governor but leans heavily Republican. Former President Donald Trump won the state by about 28 points in 2020. Kennedy, the state’s current GOP Senator, won by about 20 points during his 2016 race. Louisiana holds a “jungle primary,” meaning all candidates compete in the same primary.

If no candidate receives more than 50%of the vote, the top two vote recipients advance to a runoff election. Former Navy fighter pilot Luke Mixon is also running as a Democrat.
