GOP-led medical marijuana initiative confronting resistance due to a broader push for full cannabis legalization by Democrats.

A clash of visions over cannabis policy has emerged in Wisconsin, with a GOP-led medical marijuana initiative confronting resistance due to a broader push for full cannabis legalization by Democrats.

GOP Vs. Democrat Cannabis Views

Sen. Mary Felzkowski (R), a proponent of a more constrained medical cannabis system, expressed concerns that broader legalization ambitions are stymying efforts to garner GOP support for her patient-centric reform. “It does make it harder in our caucus,” Felzkowski commented to PBS Wisconsin, pointing out that many Republicans are wary of following in the footsteps of states like Illinois and Minnesota

This sentiment is in direct contrast with the stance of Sen. Melissa Agard (D), who’s pushing for a more comprehensive legalization. In comments to Marijuana Moment, Agard highlighted that nearly 70% of Wisconsin voters favor legalizing cannabis for adult use and asserted, “Republicans are the only people standing in the way of cannabis reform.”

Although Felzkowski acknowledges growing support for her medical marijuana bill among Republicans, she told Marijuana Moment that any approved legislation would come with restrictions, potentially excluding smoking cannabis and limiting eligible medical conditions.

In previous sessions, GOP-led attempts to remove cannabis reform provisions from the budget presented by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers have been recurrent.

Cannabis Spending in Neighboring States

Adding to the debate is a report revealing that half of Wisconsinites aged 21 and over reside within a 75-minute drive to an out-of-state legal cannabis vendor. Furthermore, Wisconsin citizens reportedly spent over $121 million on marijuana in neighboring Illinois last year, translating to approximately $36 million in tax revenue for Illinois.

Influencing Voices at Wisconsin’s Cannabis Crossroads

Medical Or Adult Use? Wisconsin's Cannabis Debate Heats Up

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R) has conveyed a preference for medical cannabis discussions without the shadow of full legalization, being consistent with its previous positions on the subject. However, voices like Gov. Evers advocate drawing parallels between marijuana and alcohol, signaling the need for a more comprehensive strategy.

Amid the heated debate and with cannabis possession still criminalized in the state, reform becomes crucial. As neighboring states move forward with their own cannabis regulation, Wisconsin finds itself grappling with the choice between limited medical legalization or a broader embrace of the cannabis industry.

Why Some Enjoy Smoking Weed While Others Feel Anxious?

Did you ever wonder why cannabis doesn’t affect everyone the same way? Why do some people experience pleasure and relaxation when smoking pot and others get anxious or even paranoid?

Psychiatrist: Why Some Enjoy Smoking Weed While Others Feel Anxious? Does Frequent Use Change Personality?

Psychiatrist: Why Some Enjoy Smoking Weed While Others Feel Anxious? Does Frequent Use Change Personality?© Provided by Benzinga

To understand the various effects the same plant has on the same species, we humans that is, it’s essential to understand not only the plant and its components, but our own endocannabinoid system.

Enter neuroscience.

First things first, what is the endocannabinoid system?

Simply put, it is a biological system in the body that helps regulate and balance key bodily functions. An American psychiatrist with a private practice in San Francisco and Marin County focuses on addictions. In his book, “Marijuana on My Mind: The Science and Mystique of Cannabis,” Timmen L. Cermak, M.D. explores various questions about marijuana and its effects.

In his January post in Psychology Today, Cermak tries to explain how it feels to be high and why this experience can sometimes resemble meditation. In a new post, he focuses on “how THC and CBD ingestion produces pleasant effects for so many people, why too frequent use of cannabis can produce subtle cognitive and emotional impairments, and how selective use of cannabis has medicinal benefits for a variety of illnesses.”

Cermak looks at Koen Van Laere’s discovery of how genetic differences in the density of active CB1 receptors determine temperamental characteristics of extroversion exhibited in novelty-seeking and often risk-taking and introversion’s novelty and risk avoidance.

Cermak explains how THC increases endocannabinoid system activity, lowering the bar for experiencing novelty. This is why, when some people are, they notice things that they hadn’t noticed a long time ago, like the rainbow on each soap bubble. For some cannabis consumers, weed can help them become more fascinated with the everyday world.

On the other hand, too frequent cannabis use leads to raising the bar for experiencing novelty higher than normal, thus leading to a sense of boredom. “High cannabinoid activity produces novelty; low cannabinoid activity reduces novelty,” writes Cermak.

This means that people born with low CB1 receptors may feel good when THC increases their amygdala endocannabinoid system activity, as it “brightens their interest in the world.” On the other hand, people with high CB1 receptors who are already close to saturation with novelty could be overwhelmed with THC to the point of feeling anxious.

Temperament & Personality

Cermak notes an important distinction between temperament and personality when he says that “temperament is genetically determined and should not be conflated with personality.” He explains that two people with the same temperamental trait of novelty-seeking can develop two destructive personalities: “one becoming an inveterate world traveler while the other becomes ensnared in a series of drug addictions.”

In the end, Cermak highlights how Laere’s research offers a basis for understanding why the 20% reduction in CB1 receptors caused by frequent marijuana use could lead to temperament and ultimately personality changes. However, research confirming this theory would be unethical, so all we can do is trust anecdotes that indicate how regular marijuana use is related to various personality changes.

CBDH Research Shows Painkilling Properties. What is CBDH?

Reported on the much-discussed scientific discovery of a THC analog thirty times more efficacious than the infamous D9-THC. An earlier study found THCP, as well as CBDP, which are larger forms of THC and CBD, respectively. Now, the same team of researchers from Italy bridged a gap between regular CBD and CBDP. They found a unique form of THC as well as CBDH, a new cannabinoid for pain.

The size of the cannabinoid depends, mostly, on the number of carbon atoms. Regular THC and CBD have side chains that consist of five carbon atoms, and the ‘phorol‘ cannabinoids contain seven. Whereas, CBDH (cannabidihexol) is a hexyl cannabinoid with a six-carbon sidechain. (1)

NEW THC FOUND WITHOUT LUCK

Adding to the discovery, the team also found THCH (Δ9– tetrahydrocannabihexol). However, the quantity they collected was insufficient for further tests. It is still unknown if THCH is an intoxicant; potent like THC or even THCP. In any case, the new variants came as no surprise considering a cannabinoid that resembles THCH was synthesized in 1949. This artificial substance, known as parahexyl, is psychoactive and similar in structure to THCH. So, the researchers decided to check. They had to make sure they were looking at new natural analogs of THC and CBD, not some previously known methylated groups.

The Regional European Development Fund financed the research project in Florence, Italy. The team studied a strain known as CIN-RO, which was bred by the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA) in Rovigo, Italy. And like all cannabis approved for research in the boot-shaped nation, the Italian Military cultivated and provided the cannabis.

Institute of Research Italy
Stabilimento Chimico Farmaceutico Militare

CBDH OR BUST

When the team isolated CBDH, on the other hand, they collected enough to study its effects on mice. Interest that the researchers took in CBDH in this study contrasted the team’s research on phorol cannabinoids (THCP) one year prior. The earlier scientific discovery disregarded CBDP for its lack of cannabinoid receptor activity. But, regular CBD, with a five-carbon chain, lacks true activity at the cannabinoid receptor and instead has an allosteric relationship that took decades for man to truly appreciate. Now, the market is flooded and stocks have gone to mushrooms.

ORIGINS OF AN ANALGESIC CANNABINOID

Thankfully, without enough THCH on hand, the researchers took interest in CBDH and the new cannabinoid’s effect on pain. CBDH produced strong antinociceptive (painkilling) properties in mice at an (intraperitoneal) dose of one and two milligrams per kilogram. Interestingly, that effect was void at a higher dose of five milligrams per kilogram. The low dose is on par with regular CBD, but CBDH has atypical effects at larger doses which suggests a biphasic effect.

The team hypothesized the presence of CBGH as a logical origin of other hexyl-cannabinoids. This is because CBG is the origin of both, THC and CBD, much like CBGV which becomes CDBV or THCV. After much analysis, however, they did not find CBGH or any related cannabinoid. In the end, they could not determine how the hexyl cannabinoids, THCH and CBDH, formed in the plant. Clearly, science requires more research to truly understand new variants of THC and CBD found in analytical success stories.

CBDH exhibits pain-relieving qualities (much like its CBD counterpart)

This is the most interesting part of the study. When the Italian researchers identified CBDP a year ago, they found it had very little affinity with cannabinoid receptors and didn’t activate them the same way THCP did.

The same cannot be said for CBDH — not even in the slightest.

Researchers were able to obtain a sufficient sample of CBDH and analyze its pharmacological effects in mice test subjects. They found lower doses were more effective for pain relief and pain management. 1.2 mg/kg of CBDH reduced pain response and 2 mg/kg of CBDH significantly blocked the physiological detection of pain.

CBDH and THCH molecular structure

Interestingly, higher doses (3 and 5 mg/kg) had no pain-relieving effects, which isn’t wholly uncommon. High doses of certain cannabinoids don’t necessarily equate to more effective. Low and medium doses of, say, THC can be more effective than higher doses for certain ailments.

What the researchers say about CBDH’s pain-relieving properties

The researchers believe CBDH’s pain-relief and pain-management qualities could be the result of vanilloid receptor activation (TRPV1), which helps mediate pain, pain-perception, and body temperature. In higher doses, however, they believe CBDH may block CB1 and CB2 receptors involved in the body’s response to pain, causing no pain-relief at all.

How does this differ from CBD?

CBD isn’t known for having the greatest relationship with your endocannabinoid system. Doesn’t bind to either cannabinoid 1 or cannabinoid 2 receptors. In fact, it barely even touches them (not directly at least). CBD has more of an affinity with other receptor sites e.g. serotonin (5-HT) receptors and the aforementioned vanilloid (TRPV1) receptors.

CBD’s targeting of serotonin and vanilloid receptors produces different effects and benefits from each other. Serotonin activation produces anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects in rodent test subjects, whereas vanilloid activation results in the mediation of pain-perception, inflammation, and body temperature.

Because CBDH’s molecular structure is almost similar to CBD’s (CBDH has a six-alkyl side chain, while CBD has a five-alkyl side chain), it’s not unreasonable to assume they act in a similar way.

Everything You Need To Know About CBD!

How CBDH could be used

To be perfectly honest, we can only surmise CBDH’s real-world uses based on one study.

If CBDH is a powerful pain-reliever in mice test subjects, there’s scope to suggest low-to-moderate isolated doses, alongside other analgesic cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, and THC could be used in clinical treatment in the future.

This isn’t for certain, though. So much more needs to be looked at before we can accurately evaluate its uses beyond limited preclinical animal studies. We look forward to seeing how this exciting cannabinoid develops in the future.

Key Points:

  • In low doses (1.2–2 mg/kg), CBDH reduced pain in mice test subjects. In higher doses (2–5 mg/kg), there was no pain-relieving effect.
  • Image result for CBDH reduced pain
  • CBDH’s pain-relief qualities might be the results of vanilloid receptor activation — vanilloid receptors mediate pain and pain management.
  • Real-world use of CBDH is still unknown but could be used as a potent pain-relief cannabinoid.

Researchers were unable to sufficiently test THCH’s effects

It’s always super exciting to read about a new THC variant. THC itself is a phenomenal cannabinoid responsible for a whole heap of amazing benefits such as pain relief, neuroprotection, sleep problems, antibacterial, and antiinflammation. Its variants (delta-8-THCTHCV, etc) are also incredibly useful to you.

Unfortunately, researchers were unable to extract enough THCH to sufficiently evaluate how it interacts with rodents. It’s unknown whether THCH is intoxicating or has unique benefits similar (or separate) from THC and its other variants.

However, a near-identical synthetic homolog of THC was inadvertently created in 1949 after scientists attempted to understand THC’s effects. This homolog, known as parahexyl (n-hexyl-Δ3-THC), is intoxicating, presumably binding tightly to CB1 receptors. Used as an anti-anxiety treatment in the 20th century but later banned and placed as a Schedule I controlled substance.

Does THCH cause these effects and benefits? Maybe. But we’ll only know when more research is carried out.

There are currently no CBDH or THCH-centered products on the market

Over the past couple of years, cannabis brands and manufacturers have sight their sights on other cannabinoids away from CBD and THC. High percentages of isolated minor cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN, and CBC can now be found in several products across the US.

Right now, CBDH and THCH are naturally found in regular cannabis products but not in high percentages.

Image result for CBDH reduced pain

It might be a while before we see CBDH or THCH isolated into a product but we’re more than excited to see it!

Or will CBDH become tomorrow’s wash of marketing gimmicks

What is CO2 Extraction? What Hemp and Marijuana Growers Need to Know.

What is CO2 Extraction? The Supercritical CO2 extraction process creates phase changes in carbon dioxide utilizing temperature and pressure.

CO2 is known as a “tunable solvent” making it extremely versatile for creating a multitude of end products by controlling temperature and pressure.

These phase changes create an environment to drop out differing weights of components in the plant material.

The unique design of the Hi-Flo™ Series systems allow for separation and collection of these constituents during a single extraction.

This enables collection of light essential oils separately from other desirable constituents and heavier lipids.

Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction (SCFE) methodology delivers a clean, unaltered, consistent-yet-flexible product.

Removable Molecular Components is a Positive Clean Alternative for CBD Extraction

CO2: Clean, Safe, Quick CO2 Extraction is good business.

It allows you to create a pure, clean, quality oil that is safe to produce with little-to-no post-processing.

Processes that use toxic solvents may require many hours to purge the solvent trapped in the oil.

Multiple industries have proven that the highest efficiencies in commercial processing utilize CO2. CO2 offers you the ability to “tune” the extraction process, especially with a system that will separate constituents during an extraction.

You can target specific compounds, like terpenes (terpenoids) and THC/CBD (cannabinoids) through different operational parameters.

CO2 is also a sanitizing agent, prolonging shelf life, and, with t

he proper system and environment, yields food and medical grade oils.

CO2 extraction is a safe, clean, and highly versatile method of extracting plant botanicals, nutraceuticals, hops, and hemp.

For the Originality in Extraction

Supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) is the most widely used fluid for the Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SCFE) process across the globe. Not only is sCO2 capable of extracting the required ingredients in their pristine form, the prime reason for the surging popularity of SCFE, it also makes the process more manageable, economical, and safe.

These days, “clean label” products are selling like hot cakes. Increasingly health-conscious customers are placing a premium on natural ingredients in the food, pharmaceutical, beverage, and neutraceutical products they consume. Now, clean label is a broad term with various meanings – organic, natural, locally grown, non-GMO . . . the list goes on. Some even take it to link its maker to more transparent work practices.

Alternative processes such as Solvent Extraction and Hydro distillation leave behind harmful residues. Plus, they distort the ingredient being extracted. That is, the ingredient does not retain its natural purity. Regulations have caught up with public demand and impose exacting conditions to ensure the quality and safety of products by limiting toxic residues. One more reason to rely on CO2 SCFE.

What Makes Supercritical Carbon dioxide (sCO2) an Exceptional SCFE Solvent?

Carbon dioxide and water are the most widely employed supercritical fluids. sCO2 makes such a useful supercritical fluid because:

  • Has a critical temperature of 31.10C, which is around the ambient temperature improving its compatibility with temperature-sensitive compounds.
  • Has a more manageable critical pressure of 73.9 bar.
  • Is non-flammable and non-toxic.
  • Has a customizable density to upgrade its solvent power.
  • Is available in ample quantities and in pure form; and
  • Has a comparatively low cost.

Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas (GHG), the SCFE process using CO2 becomes eco-friendly if the gas is captured from the atmosphere and recycled.

Carbon dioxide Supercritical Fluid Extraction (CO2 SCFE)

Solvent Extraction employs organic solvents to dissolve the ingredient from the raw material. Later, it separates the organic solvent from the dissolved ingredient. The problem is, organic solvents do not completely disassociate from the ingredient, leaving behind residues.

Parameter Solvent Extraction SCF Extraction
Solvent traces in final product Yes Zero
Heavy metal content in final product Yes Zero
Inorganic salt content in final product Yes Zero
Similarity with the actual components to be extracted in terms of Colour and Flow Characteristics Less: because polar compounds get dissolved. More: because low operating temperatures and selective extraction of CO2.

Table 1. SCFE Vs Solvent Extraction

That is, the ingredient loses its natural purity. What is more, it may develop a certain degree of toxicity. But the concerns on using organic solvents for extraction go beyond toxicity for the individual. Some solvents are ozone depleting substances, and their use negatively impacts the environment.

Hydro distillation i.e., the use of water and steam distillation inherently employs heat, something that thermally degrades the ingredients. Again, the ingredient, when extracted, is no longer available in its pure form.

Parameter Steam Distillation SCF Extraction
Extraction of essential, non-volatile oils Not possible Possible
Extraction of highly volatile oils Not possible Possible
Oxidation and Hydrolysis (undesirable) Possible Not possible
Similarity of essential oils with the extracted component in terms of Form, Aroma, and Physical Characteristics Less More

Table 2. SCFE Vs Steam Distillation

As a process that holds the United States FDA’s “Green Technology” approval, CO2 SCFE enjoys sizable international clout. One reason for its eco-friendly nature is that it does not generate effluents, automatically eliminating pollution control hassles and costs.

Examined in the context of the limitations of hydrodistillation and solvent extraction, CO2 SCFE delivers a much better performance on all fronts during the extraction of:

  • Plant-based Ingredients: Solvent extraction oxidizes the ingredient that lends color and aroma. Similarly, steam distillation acts strongly and ends up altering the component’s aroma. SCFE acts mildly, thereby avoiding such unwanted changes while also delivering cleaner, fresher, and crispier extracts.
  • Herbal Medicines: CO2 SCFE is preferred over hydrodistillation when extracting essential oils because it does not thermally degenerate the oil. It is also replacing solvent extraction for seed oil separation as the solvent cannot be completely disassociated from the seed oil.
  • Astaxanthin Extraction from Haematococcus pluviales: CO2 SCFE gives superior results vis-à-vis solvent extraction that employs acetone and hexane. These solvents cannot tell between astaxanthin and the astaxanthin-lipid mixture, both of which occur inside Haematococcus pluviales. As a result, these solvents deliver a low-concentrate extract.
  • Beer, Wine, and Blended Alcohol: CO2 SCFE lowers the alcohol content of wine to a bare minimum while leaving its organopletic features undisturbed. The process also extracts the original versions of hop flavors while extending their life, thereby acting as a natural preservative for beer.

Organopletic properties of wines are their aroma, fruitiness, crispiness, sweetness, and freshness. Hop is the plant whose flower imparts the prized bitter taste to beer.

  • Phytochemicals: Because supercritical CO2 is naturally nonpolar, it can better distinguish between volatile, non-polar, and low molecular weight phytochemicals [14].

The selectivity of SCFE is an asset here as it can separate anthocyanin from the pulp of Euterpe oleracea at a certain pressure while extracting phenolic phytochemicals from that very pulp at another pressure.

  • Algae:
  • Carotenoids: Hiking the pressure and temperature of the CO2 SCFE process boosts the efficiency of carotenoid extraction. Utilizing the solvent extraction process for the same consumes large quantities of solvent, takes longer, and delivers impure and deficient yields.
  • Antioxidants: Employing CO2 SCFE on Haematococcus pluvialis, a microalgae, gives good yields of lutein, astaxanthin, and fatty acids.
  • Fatty Acids: CO2 SCFE is able to better differentiate between different fatty acids as compared to pyrolysis / thermal liquefaction and solvent extraction via hexane, the traditional methods for fatty acid extraction. Besides, these conventional techniques are slower.
  • Sterols: CO2 SCFE enables solvent-free extraction of phytosterols that are safe for use in the food and beverages industries.

The Verdict

People the world over are shifting to natural alternatives – natural medicine, natural food, natural beverages – in realization to the long-term side effects that synthetic products, possibly laced with toxic residues, can unleash on health and overall wellbeing.

Effectively this means, the SCFE process and, more specifically, the CO2 SCFE process, are here to stay . . . for ages.

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a product of the Hemp Plant Flower.

Check Your History – Who said? “Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country – If people let the Government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under Tyranny”

Answer, to Follow:

HINT (Our Third President )

For nearly 3000 years Hemp has been our planet’s largest agricultural crop and the most important industry producing the fiber, paper, clothing, lighting fuel and medicine used by much of humanity. It is and has always been Earth’s’ most sustainable natural resource. With modern technological advances it is now possible to make over 20,000 types of products from medicine to houses to cellophane, dynamite and most importantly as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics.

1942 US Government cannot take part in World War 2 without Hemp for military clothing and equipment so a campaign is launched to encourage and reward US farmers for growing Hemp with a PR video titled Hemp For Victory.

Hemp Prohibition

1945 At the end of World War 2 the US Government begins its campaign against Hemp and claims there never was a video called Hemp For Victory.

When US soldiers return from Europe they are ordered to put their Hemp uniforms back on and are sent out to American farms to burn all the Hemp crops.

1961 Henry Anslinger attended the United Nations and persuaded the UN to have Hemp cultivation prohibited in 150 countries worldwide.

As a consequence most of the world’s food, fiber, fuel and medicine went from being made organically by farmers to being produced chemically under the control of the Pharmaceutical and Petrochemical industries.

Hemp Legalization Begins Again

1996 Canada legalizes growing of Hemp which creates employment and hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue for the Canadian people.

2014 Section 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill authorized hemp research and pilot programs by state departments of agriculture and institutions of higher education. Some states have licensed farmers to conduct pilot programs and research on hemp.

In 2017 there were 19 states that allowed hemp to be grown.

2018 Farm Bill

December 2018 – The Farm Bill Legalized Hemp

The 2018 Farm Bill, enacted December 20, 2018, builds upon many of the crucial programs that serve America’s agricultural producers. USDA is implementing this new bill, which includes seeking public input on programs and provisions and designing guidelines. In the meantime, programs authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill are available to serve producers now.

The 2018 Farm Bill reclassified hemp, and it is now legal to grow industrial hemp.

The United States of Hemp Hemp and marijuana are both produced from the cannabis plant, although hemp is derived from a strain that has a much lower quantity of THC, the compound that produces hallucinogenic effects.

Hemp is made from the fibers of the plant and historically has been used to make a broad variety of products, from rope to cloth to paper.

As you can imagine, it was an important product in the New World as the American colonies were being established.

It was so important, in fact, that in 1619, Virginia passed a law requiring hemp to be grown on every farm in the colony. At the time, the crop was also considered a proper form of currency in Virginia, as well as Pennsylvania and Maryland.

As new products were imported or developed to replace hemp—cotton was surely a welcome change to the itchy fibers of hemp shirts—the plant fell out of popularity.

By the end of the Civil War, the United States’ hemp production had passed its peak, but a different version of the plant was on the rise. Marijuana was becoming an increasingly popular ingredient in medicines and tinctures. The Rise of Reefer Madness The popular image of the 1950s may be all Leave It to Beaver, but underneath the pearls and penny loafers, there was a countercultural movement bubbling to the surface.

The Beat Generation emerged early in the decade, when a group of young people began to unite in their rejection of conventional society in favor of artistic and bohemian ideals. The Beatniks also enjoyed experimenting with drugs, particularly marijuana

. But the Beats weren’t the first group to embrace weed. The drug started gaining traction in the U.S. in the 1910s after Mexican refugees brought marijuana with them as they fled the violence of the Mexican Revolution. In the 1930s, it became popular among the hepsters, the black jazz community made up of “hep cats” like jazz singer Cab Calloway, who had a hit with his song “Reefer Man.”

The Roots of Criminalization The process of criminalizing marijuana had already begun, even before the Beats took up the cannabis cause. The roots of this movement are mired in a racism that still persists in how drug policies are carried out in the U.S. today.

In the 1930s, Prohibition was repealed in the middle of the Great Depression. Straight-laced bureaucrats looking for another target turned their attention to marijuana, which, at the time, was mostly being used in the Mexican and black communities. They painted the drug—and the communities using it—as a threat to the already crippled country and began the process of banning it.

Twenty-nine states had outlawed marijuana by 1931, and in 1937, the Marijuana Tax Act was passed, essentially making the plant illegal in the United States.

Since then, lawmakers have been doing a do-si-do with the drug. Over the decades, stricter enforcement and the passing of mandatory sentencing laws have traded off with repeals of those laws and efforts at legalization.

Today, 17 states have legalized marijuana (with many more allowing medical marijuana), but, as far as the federal government is concerned, the drug is still cannabis non grata.

Thank you for consideration.

High VS Hemp — Even My Wife Loves the Results. Why Hemp Is Its Own Enemy.

Why should you be growing industrial hemp?Industrial Hemp Farm

Well, it is the crop of the future (and the past), it will soon be in high demand and it has the potential to be an economic genie in a bottle. Hemp takes half the water that wheat does, and provides four times the income. Hemp is giving farming families in the climate change era.—

Colorado farmer Ryan Loflin Growing industrial hemp used to be a legal crop however, many years ago a few guys in a room decided it was too close to the marijuana plant and rather than take the time to do the research and learn they were wrong, they just decided to make it illegal. But times, they are a-changin’.

See the source image

There are now all states in which farmers are legally growing industrial hemp; some for agricultural study and others as their primary crop. If you are considering changing out your cotton or wheat or even tobacco for another, more economical and profitable crop, now is the time to research the benefits of growing industrial hemp.

So What Are the Benefits of Growing Industrial Hemp?

The hemp growing season is relatively short and farmers can fit in two growing seasons in a single year. Industrial hemp requires much less water than other crops. It grows in a variety of soil consistencies making it ideal regardless of the terrain or climate Hemp plants do not require pesticides making it more affordable and non-toxic. Industrial hemp plants are used in their entirety, producing more than 25,000 different products and a variety of industries

The United States has a multi-million dollar need for the product which has been previously imported so the demand already exists From a recent Hemp, Inc. press release we learn: “In 2011, the U.S. imported $11.5 million worth of legal hemp products, up from $1.4 million in 2000. Most of that growth was seen in hemp seed and hemp oil, which finds its way into granola bars and other products.” Other estimates place the U.S. 2013 hemp sales at half a billion dollars ($500 million). And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

From the article announcing Alabama House and Senate Passing the Industrial Hemp Bill we learn: Thus far in the United States, 27 states which include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Virginia have adopted pro hemp laws. The United States remains one of the biggest importers of hemp.

See the source image

Over 30 countries produce industrial hemp, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine. And Louisiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania are set to pass the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2015 next.

You can help make the future happen by signing the petition from the National Hemp Association. They need your help to get 1M signatures and raise the money to take this to the federal level and make industrial hemp legal across all 50 states. It is time to prepare for the future and the future includes farmers growing industrial hemp. Are you on board

There’s a new hemp trend sweeping the nation and it has nothing to do with those beaded friendship bracelets from the ‘90s.

Twenty-three states have now enacted pro-industrial hemp legislation (Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the latest bill this past week), making the cousin crop to marijuana a national phenomenon. Since the beginning of the year, more than 70 bills related to hemp have been introduced in more than half of the country’s states. Passage of the recent Farm Bill, which legalized the crop for research purposes, further cleared the way for industrial hemp production.

Hemp, which is the same species as marijuana (Cannabis sativa) but contains little to no THC, was grown widely in America before anti-drug sentiment helped make it unpopular in the 1950s. Today, however, the nation’s turning tide on marijuana means its “sober cousin“ is also making a comeback.

Hemp policy is “not just turning a corner,” Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) told The Huffington Post earlier this year. “It’s turning a corner and running downhill.”

So what’s with America’s new obsession with hemp? Below, 9 reasons this wonder crop is sweeping the nation, almost all of which are rooted in the crop’s sustainable and environmentally-friendly characteristics:

1. It’s a farmer’s best friend
Not only does hemp grow in a variety of climates and soil types, it also grows very tightly spaced (decreasing land use) and has a fast growing rate (which leads to high yields). Farmers in Canada are reportedly making $300-per-acre profits from growing hemp. Moreover, because the crop improves soil health (see below), farmers can grow food crops immediately after a hemp harvest without a fallow period.

2. It’s an environmentalist’s best friend
Ever wonder where the nickname “weed” comes from? The hemp plant grows like one, obviating the need for most pesticides (it is naturally resistant to most pests), herbicides, fungicides and thriving on less water than most crops. Because of its resiliency, it has also been flagged as a natural way to clean up soil pollution. Using a process called phyto-remediation, hemp was used at Chernobyl to harmlessly extract toxins and pollutants from the soil and groundwater. Hemp actually absorbs CO2 while it grows through natural photosynthesis, making it carbon-negative from the get-go.

3. It can compete with cotton
Hemp has been used as a fabric since time immemorial. As a textile, hemp is durable, comes in a variety of natural colors based on how it is processed from the plant, and has “a wonderful drape, comparable to linen,” according to Patagonia. Plus, it needs approximately half as much land and half as much water as cotton does to thrive.

4. It’s a “superfood”
Hemp seeds are used in a variety of health foods, including hemp seed butters, hemp seed energy bars, hemp oil and even hemp seed milks. The seeds have a nutty flavor and are regarded as a superfood since they are high in omega-3 fatty acids and complete protein.

5. It could save the trees
Hemp pulp has been used to create paper for at least 2,000 years, including a draft of the Declaration of Independence, but it is currently significantly pricier to process than wood pulp. If processing costs come down, however, hemp pulp could conceivably replace wood pulp, creating a more durable, sustainable and recyclable paper. Moreover, hemp’s low lignin content and naturally light color mean that fewer chemicals and less bleach would be needed to pulp and color hemp paper.

6. It can be made into bio-fuel
A 2009 study from the University of Connecticut’s Biofuel Consortium found that hemp seed oil made a “viable and even attractive“ feedstock for producing biodiesel. Hemp biodiesel proved to be high efficiency (97 percent of the hemp oil was converted to biodiesel) and could even be used at lower temperatures than other biodiesels.

7. We can make carbon-neutral buildings with it
Lovingly called “hempcrete,” hemp fiber can be mixed with lime to create carbon-neutral building supplies, including insulation, pressboard, flooring and wall construction. Hempcrete is energy-efficient, non-toxic and resistant to mold, insects and fire. Moreover, it is easier to work with than concrete and just as strong.

8. It can replace plastic
Henry Ford famously built a car out of hemp & soy plastic in the early 1940s, and Lotus recently did the same. In 2008, the Lotus Eco Elise used hemp in its composite body panels and spoiler, and many car manufacturers have since switched to hemp composites for door panels, columns, seat backs, boot linings, floor consoles and instrument panels. Hemp composites are stronger, lighter and cheaper than fiber glass and carbon fiber — plus, they’re recyclable!
lotus eco elise

9. It could make America a lot of money
Currently, America imports most of its hemp seed and hemp oil from China and Canada. In 2011, the U.S. imported $11.5 million worth of hemp products, up from $1.4 million in 2000. With the laws against industrial hemp changing, however, the U.S. has a chance to create domestic jobs and capitalize on the growing market. Some estimates value the U.S. industrial hemp market at $500 million per year; Canada’s hemp industry is reportedly going to break a billion dollars this year in earnings.
