Hemp, Nature’s “wonder crop” is in the spotlight again during the USDA Secretary’s recent tour of Lincoln University’s Dickinson Research Facility.

Las Vegas, NV, Feb. 15, 2022 Hemp, Nature’s “wonder crop” is in the spotlight again during the USDA Secretary’s recent tour of Lincoln University’s Dickinson Research Facility. reports today that hemp’s role in sustainable agriculture has garnered the attention of USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, as he recently announced that $1 billion in grants will be offered by the federal government to support climate-friendly farming when he toured the facility that studies agriculture.

According to the news source, grants under this program are intended to “engage agriculture, forestry and rural communities in the nation’s fight against climate change” and bolster sustainable agriculture.

What’s more climate-friendly than hemp? Environmentalists believe this “wonder crop” has the potential to make huge strides in the regenerative agriculture movement. Let’s take a look at why they believe that and how industrial hemp farming projects could see some of that $1 billion in grant money. First, hemp can improve soil health. It can be cultivated in almost any environment across the country regardless of the climate and generate high yields with a short 120-day harvest cycle (ideal for crop rotation).

Weed or wonder crop? How hemp harvests could transform the farming landscape

The self-sustaining Smartbox processes the hemp plant into high-value hemp seed oil that can be used as a biodiesel (some of which can fuel the Smartbox’s own generator), fuel pellets or livestock bedding, and hemp seed cake.

“As a cover crop, hemp restores degraded soil by blocking out the room for weeds – reducing the need for synthetic herbicides and adding diversity to crop rotations.” After harvest, hemp leaves behind biomass that can be “up-cycled into added-value products or returned to the soil, feeding essential nutrients back into the ground.”

Second, hemp supports bioremediation.

Bioremediation is when you use living things to heal and cleanse soil after years of toxic build-up. Hemp has a deep root structure and guards against weeds, naturally preparing the soil for rotation. One can liken hemp’s root structure to a vacuum cleaner – accumulating heavy metals and other toxins from the soil before it enters surrounding groundwater.

Third, hemp grows faster than trees and can “sequester large quantities of carbon dioxide back into the ground.”

Hemp is “a zero-carbon energy source with applications in biofuel.” In fact, scientists estimate that “for every ton of hemp cultivated, 1.63 tons of CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.” (Source) Overall, hemp, as the industry continues to mature, has the power to “lower the ecological impacts of food, fuel and fiber production, empower small-scale farmers and create jobs in a variety of industries.”

But while we praise this wonder crop, we have to remember a total hemp-based economy doesn’t automatically equate to a greener future. Yes, the industry is maturing but it’s up to the farmers to ensure that it’s grown in a way that heals the land, not destroy it like conventional commodity crops which erodes soil and externalizes pollution.

The Climate 21 Project (the funding program that’s part of a broader initiative) under the Biden administration outlines the steps the USDA can take to encourage farmers, ranchers and landowners to take up practices that scientists believe can help reduce atmospheric carbon. It “taps the expertise of more than 150 experts with high-level government experience to deliver actionable advice for a rapid-start, whole-of-government climate response coordinated by the White House” and accountable to President Biden.

The Hemp Inc Company projects that it may be eligible to receive some of the $1 billion funding must “demonstrate climate-smart production practices, activities and systems on working lands; verify the carbon and greenhouse-gas benefits associated with those practices; and work to develop markets and promote their climate-smart commodities.”

The grants are available to local, county, tribal and state governments, small businesses and for-profit organizations, nonprofits and universities. Applications are being accepted for projects between $5 million to $100 million through April 8th but the deadline for pilot projects up to $250,000 is May 27th.

With the industrial hemp market growing exponentially, resources and contacts are invaluable. The industrial hemp market is expected to reach $12.01 billion by 2028 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.2% from 2021 to 2028, per the most recent study by Grand View Research, Inc.

Trulieve has completed the acquisition of an Operational 64,000 sq. ft. Cultivation Facility in Phoenix and Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Recreational Cannabis Sales in Arizona

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 21, 2022 Trulieve Cannabis Corp In Recent News announced it has completed the acquisition of an operational 64,000 sq. ft. cultivation facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

Trulieve will pay $13.75 million cash at closing, with potential milestone payments subject to earn-out and escrow requirements.

The new cultivation facility immediately improves supply chain capacity and becomes Trulieve’s fifth cultivation facility in Arizona, supporting Trulieve’s 17 dispensaries in the state of Arizona with flower for medical patients and adult-use customers. Canadians Love Their Beer! and Cannabis Outshines both Beer and Wine

The cannabis sector contributed $17 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the year ending July 2021. Unlike beer ($9.3 billion sales) or wine ($8 billion sales), all adult-use cannabis sold in Canada is produced in Canada, magnifying the impact of cannabis on the country’s GDP.

“When you talk to them and you let them know that the GDP contribution right now is comparable to auto manufacturing, or to life sciences or even to dairy, when you show them those statistics they’re quite taken aback,” Khan told BNN Bloomberg in an interview.

“I’m hopeful out of this latest round of meetings that we will be able to get some sort of movement, the proof will be in the pudding, but I’m cautiously optimistic at this point.”

Rishi Malkani, a partner at Deloitte who heads the consultancy’s Canadian cannabis practice, added that cannabis has added to the government’s coffers as well as to the construction sector.

“Our hope with this report is that people would realize that the industry’s done a lot more than simply provide [licensed producers] with $4 billion of retail access,” Malkani said. “It’s loaded government coffers and it’s been a boon to the construction industry.”

Despite the layoffs, losses and the pandemic, the Canadian cannabis sector held its own, according to a new report released by Deloitte in conjunction with the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS). “Deloitte said the cannabis sector has generated more than $15 billion in direct and indirect tax revenue for Canadian and provincial governments, while creating more than 151,000 jobs since Canada legalized recreational use of the drug in Oct. 2018,” said Omar Khan, senior VP of corporate and public affairs at High Tide

Racial Diversity and Environmental Impact – Lower Scores

The report also shed light on the lack of diversity in Canada’s cannabis industry as it re-examined a study by the University of Toronto that found that 72% of executives and directors in the sector identify as Caucasian males, while only 16% identify as racialized individuals.

It also highlighted the environmental impact that the cannabis industry bears, with 5,184 kilograms of carbon emissions being expelled into the atmosphere for every kilogram of dried flower produced. As well, between 5.8 million to 6.4 million kilograms of cannabis packaging were sent to landfills from 2018 to 2019 alone.

LOS ANGELES, CA January 6, 2022, Cannabis Global, Inc. and Active Health Foods, Inc. today announce the cannabis consumer brands to be included in their recently announced letter of intent to create a joint venture with the Hub Craft, a licensed and permitted Massachusetts cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, and retail company.

BOISE — Amid years of historic drought and a push for more sustainable resources to lower carbon emissions, industrial hemp legalization may have come along at just the right time for Idaho agriculture. Licensed handlers are allowed to process raw hemp materials into other materials, but they can’t grow the crop.

Hemp is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated crops in modern human history, but it only became legal to grow in Idaho last year. Farmers are beginning to receive licenses from the state to produce and handle the crop during this growing season for commodities such as insulation, paper, oil and food products.

All States had to comply in some fashion to this Government Legislation with a plan and implementation. Now that the deals have all been done, it’s time to analyze, just what has each state accomplished.

Thanks to House Bill No. 26 passing in Idaho’s April 2021 legislature, with an emergency clause that made the law effective as soon as it passed both chambers of the Legislature, approved farmers are now receiving their hemp licenses so that they can legally “produce and handle the crop during this growing season for commodities such as insulation, paper, oil and food products.” According to the news source, Idaho took a very “methodical and diligent approach” to what it would mean for the state to legalize the crop. Coupled, both of these factors are expected to result in the increased demand for high-quality cosmetics, personal care products, protein supplements, and other health food products, and are expected to drive the market over the projected period

Idaho’s industrial hemp legalization gives its farmers an opportunity to diversify their operations, potentially creating more opportunities to do business with other companies in the industry. Idaho Farm Bureau’s deputy government affairs director, Braden Jensen, said the Bureau has been “pushing for the policy change for the better part of the past 20 years, but the 2018 Federal Farm Bill that removed hemp from the controlled substances list made the issue a priority in the 2021 legislative session.” Idaho now has two licensing options for its farmers (handlers and producers). Both licenses will require a background check on its owner that has to be renewed annually and producers will have their hemp lots tested for acceptable levels of THC (below 0.3%). If any sample of the lot tests higher than this threshold, the entire crop will either be destroyed or blended with a different strain to lower the THC amount. The news source said the state had about 60 applications in November of 2021 and as of today, 8 have been fully granted (4 handlers, 3 producers, 1 handler/producer). For those granted licenses, the news could not have come at a better time. The industrial hemp market is growing exponentially. A new report by Grand View Research, Inc. and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.2% from 2021 to 2028. The report also mentioned population growth and the rising per capita disposable income.
