Flower market share is in decline in both the US and Canada. Sales from female consumers in the US have increased 55%, while sales from male consumers have increased 49%.

Gen Z consumers are quickly aging into the market, with US market share to this age group more than doubling over the last two years, from 8.3% to 15%.

Vapor Pen wallet share decreases with customer age, while Edible wallet share increases with customer age.

Meanwhile, Pre-Roll wallet share is remarkably constant across age groups, indicating that the convenience and familiarity of a pre-rolled joint has universal appeal.

Both Gen Z and Millennial females logged much higher sales shares in Canada last quarter than their American counterparts. In fact, female customers overall contributed 36.7% of total sales in Canada while in America that value was only 32.6%.

Those are the trends and here are the products. When exploring product categories, reports found that certain categories have been more successful than others in the US and Canada.

This is likely caused by a steady decrease in customer participation in the category, rather than a decreased spend among customers who prefer flower.

Trulieve has completed the acquisition of an Operational 64,000 sq. ft. Cultivation Facility in Phoenix and Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Recreational Cannabis Sales in Arizona

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 21, 2022 Trulieve Cannabis Corp In Recent News announced it has completed the acquisition of an operational 64,000 sq. ft. cultivation facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

Trulieve will pay $13.75 million cash at closing, with potential milestone payments subject to earn-out and escrow requirements.

The facility strengthens Trulieve’s presence in the cornerstone market of our Southwest hub, as well as expands our cultivation capacity. The new cultivation facility immediately improves supply chain capacity and becomes Trulieve’s fifth cultivation facility in Arizona, supporting Trulieve’s 17 dispensaries in the state of Arizona with flower for medical patients and adult-use customers. Canadians Love Their Beer! and Cannabis Outshines both Beer and Wine

The cannabis sector contributed $17 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the year ending July 2021. Unlike beer ($9.3 billion sales) or wine ($8 billion sales), all adult-use cannabis sold in Canada is produced in Canada, magnifying the impact of cannabis on the country’s GDP.

“When you talk to them and you let them know that the GDP contribution right now is comparable to auto manufacturing, or to life sciences or even to dairy, when you show them those statistics they’re quite taken aback,” Khan told BNN Bloomberg in an interview.

“I’m hopeful out of this latest round of meetings that we will be able to get some sort of movement, the proof will be in the pudding, but I’m cautiously optimistic at this point.”

Rishi Malkani, a partner at Deloitte who heads the consultancy’s Canadian cannabis practice, added that cannabis has added to the government’s coffers as well as to the construction sector.

“Our hope with this report is that people would realize that the industry’s done a lot more than simply provide [licensed producers] with $4 billion of retail access,” Malkani said. “It’s loaded government coffers and it’s been a boon to the construction industry.”

Despite the layoffs, losses and the pandemic, the Canadian cannabis sector held its own, according to a new report released by Deloitte in conjunction with the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS). “Deloitte said the cannabis sector has generated more than $15 billion in direct and indirect tax revenue for Canadian and provincial governments, while creating more than 151,000 jobs since Canada legalized recreational use of the drug in Oct. 2018,” said Omar Khan, senior VP of corporate and public affairs at High Tide

Racial Diversity and Environmental Impact – Lower Scores

The report also shed light on the lack of diversity in Canada’s cannabis industry as it re-examined a study by the University of Toronto that found that 72% of executives and directors in the sector identify as Caucasian males, while only 16% identify as racialized individuals.

It also highlighted the environmental impact that the cannabis industry bears, with 5,184 kilograms of carbon emissions being expelled into the atmosphere for every kilogram of dried flower produced. As well, between 5.8 million to 6.4 million kilograms of cannabis packaging were sent to landfills from 2018 to 2019 alone.

Mississippi Becomes 37th State to Legalize Medical Marijuana Mississippi joined 36 other U.S. states in legalizing marijuana for medical use on Wednesday, as the governor signed legislation permitting cannabis for treatment of severe, debilitating health conditions such as cancer, AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease.

Announcing enactment of the bill, Governor Tate Reeves said the final version passed last week by the Republican-controlled legislature was designed to curb recreational marijuana use, such as by allowing patients to obtain no more than 3 ounces of cannabis per month, or 3.5 grams a day. Reeves, a first-term Republican, said that limit alone would result in “hundreds of millions of fewer joints on the streets” compared with the original, more permissive version of the bill. The new law becomes effective immediately. Under it, an individual can legally obtain medical marijuana only if diagnosed with one of approximately two dozen qualifying conditions, including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder and severe injury. The measure also permits cannabis to be prescribed for any “pain state in which the cause of the pain cannot be removed or otherwise treated … and which no relief or cure of the cause of the pain is possible.” Written certification must be provided by a licensed healthcare professional with whom patients have a bona fide relationship, and the bill requires an in-person office visit to obtain one.

Only a physician can prescribe for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, and parental consent is also required for minors. Mississippi voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to establish a medical cannabis program in November 2020, but it was later invalidated when the state Supreme Court struck down the state’s entire ballot initiative process. According to the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), Mississippi becomes the 37th of 50 states to allow some form of medical marijuana program, even though cannabis remains classified as an illegal narcotic under U.S. federal law. As of November, 18 states and the District of Columbia have enacted measures to regulate cannabis for non-medical use by adults, the NCSL said.

The new law prohibits the state from providing economic development incentives for the cannabis industry. The state often provides tax breaks and financial assistance for roads or water access to industrial sites. The law gives cities and counties 90 days to opt out of allowing medical marijuana facilities, for growing or selling. But people in those communities could petition for an election to overrule local officials’ decisions and allow them. Clint Patterson is chief executive officer of Mockingbird Cannabis, which plans to operate in the state. He said cannabis products can alleviate pain and suffering. “We look forward to serving the citizens of Mississippi as they seek to improve their health and quality of life through responsible cannabis use,” Patterson said in a statement.

Any experienced wine aficionado can tell with one sip the geographic area where the grapes used to create a wine were grown. Wine inherits characteristics from the soil where the grapes were grown, the climate of the site that produced it, and the practices of the winemaker. There are currently 252 AVAs in 33 states across the country.

As grape cultivation and winemaking increased across the United States over the past 50 years, smaller wineries began producing more wines from locally grown varietals.

Today, there are wineries in all 50 states, and more parts of the country are developing their own “wine countries.”

What was once considered a solely New York state or California industry has expanded to include Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Colorado.

American Viticultural Areas

When a U.S. winery wants to tell you the geographic pedigree of its wine, it uses a tag on its label called an Appellation of Origin. Appellations are defined either by political boundaries, such as the name of a county, state or country, or by federally-recognized regions called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).

In order for a wine to be designated with an Appellation of Origin defined by a political boundary, such as a county name for example, federal law requires that 75 percent or more of grapes used to make the wine be from that appellation, and that the wine be fully finished within the state in which the county is located. A wine bearing “California” as an Appellation of Origin must, under state law, be made with 100% grapes that were grown and finished in the Golden State. View a list of California’s 58 counties and more detailed requirements for appellation use.

If a wine is designated with the name of an American Viticultural Area (AVA), federal regulations require that 85 percent or more of the wine is derived from grapes grown within the boundaries of that TTB-established AVA and that the wine is fully finished within the state or one of the states in which the AVA is located. Certain states have stricter standards for use of the name of an Appellation/AVA on wine labels.
