Mask Research Shows EFFECTIVENESS against COVID.

Mask Filtration Studies

AS A PUBLIC SERVICE< INSPIRATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES PRESENTS THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH>

Public health experts recommend wearing face masks as tools to protect others from breathing potentially infectious particles.

At the request of University of North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals, EPA scientists are working to understand the effectiveness of masks to protect the wearer against the virus through a series of projects in collaboration with UNC researchers.

Researchers tested how well different masks and modifications filter out airborne salt particles, which are the same size as the smallest SARS-CoV-2 particles, but are not harmful.

Members of the research team wore the face coverings to do the testing themselves. “We were fortunate to have the lab already prepared for a different study before the COVID-19 pandemic set in, so we were able to pivot to help answer important questions UNC Hospitals and other researchers had about masks,” said Dr. James Samet, a research biologist and collaborator on the projects.

“We’ve performed hundreds of tests to provide the most useful information for decision makers and the public to help fight this virus.”

In one study, the researchers sought to determine whether alternatives to high-efficiency N95 masks reserved for health care workers could offer similar protection for hospital personnel in the event of shortages.

They tested the filtration ability of expired N95 masks, N95 masks that had been sterilized for reuse, and dozens of other face mask alternatives.

The results show that both expired N95 masks and sterilized N95 masks provided the same level of protection as new N95 masks with greater than 95 percent filtration.

Other alternatives provided less protection.

For example, surgical masks with ties provided 71.5 percent filtration, while surgical masks with ear loops only provided 38.1 percent.

Knowing the relative performance of alternatives to new N95 masks will help hospital administrators make evidence-based decisions to protect their staff.

In another study, the researchers examined the filtration ability of a variety of medical procedure masks, cloth masks and coverings recommended for the public.

They tested masks made from cotton, nylon, and other materials and in different styles, including masks with ear loops and ties.

They found that the effectiveness of the masks varied widely: a three-layer knitted cotton mask blocked an average of 26.5 percent of particles in the chamber, while a washed, two-layer woven nylon mask with a filter insert and metal nose bridge blocked 79 percent of particles on average.

Other masks scored somewhere in between.

They also tested a variety of modifications to improve the fit of commercially available medical procedure masks, like tightening ear loops, placing rubber bands over the top and bottom of the mask to reduce gaps, and placing a cut-out piece of nylon stocking over the mask to seal the gaps.

The filtration ability improved by 60.3 to 80.2 percent depending on the modification made.

As the fit of the medical procedure masks improved, so did their filtration efficiency.

In their study of masks recommended for the public, the researchers emphasize the importance of mask material and fit.

Their results indicate that not only are certain cloth masks effective at keeping out viral particles, but in many cases perform as well as or better than non-N95 medical masks.

Fabrics with multiple woven layers and reducing gaps provide substantially more particle filtration.

The team continues to explore mask performance with studies in progress on the effects of facial hair and face shape on mask fit.

The results of these projects will help the public and health care professionals choose mask options that provide the greatest level of protection.

“CBD is My Go To” say some 2020 Olympic Athletes

Effective Jan. 1, 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances.

The change allowed athletes to incorporate CBD into their training regimes for the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Competitors in the delayed 2020 Summer Games, including softball outfielder Hayley McCleney and hurdler Devon Allen, are among those who utilized CBD products in the runup to the Olympic competition.

Olympic gold medalists Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird also use hemp-derived CBD for natural wellness solutions. “I use [CBD] right after training,” Rapinoe said. “It’s my go-to to calm me down after a hard training or game, as well as for sleep.”

The Summer Olympics were in Tokyo, Japan, through this past Sunday (National CBD Day in the USA) Aug. 8, 2021.

However, Japan’s strict anti-cannabis laws don’t permit athletes to take hemp products across international borders. “It’s quite frustrating that I can’t use them to compete on the world’s biggest stage,” Rapinoe said.

Attitudes about cannabis are shifting, and elite athletes are being more open about using cannabis to recover better, and stay on top of their game longer. U.S.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently introduced draft legislation to federally legalize cannabis.

The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA) addresses several areas where the Federal Government lags behind individual states in recognizing the benefits of cannabis.

Proposals in the bill include removing cannabis from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act.

Support for legalization of cannabis has been growing rapidly in the United States since 2012.

December 2018 – The Farm Bill Legalized Hemp

This is reflected globally in WADA’s policy change as well as nationally with the legalization of hemp in the 2018 Farm Bill.

8 – 8 – 2021 Happy CBD Day! From Inspirational Technologies

About National CBD Day The CBD industry celebrates National CBD Day on August 8 every year.

The CBD community continues to commemorate CBD Day, which focuses on educating and creating awareness about CBD among consumers through media coverage and social media.

Issues covered include ongoing studies, CBD uses, and its benefits. However, CBD brands also provide deals to enjoy during this holiday.

CBD is a derivative of hemp, which has faced its share of political problems, with leaders banning its use.

The hemp plant has been around for centuries, with growers using it for fiber and other things. However, it was until 2018 that hemp became legal federally.

The 2018 Farm Bill that became law recognizes hemp as legal if it has 0.3% THC or less.

The CBD industry continues to gain popularity as more people learn of CBD’s potential wellness benefits.

Today, you can utilize CBD in a variety of ways. Users can consume CBD in the form of oil or capsules or choose delicious gummies, which come in various mouth-watering flavors.

Brands also provide CBD topicals like creams and salves that offer targeted relief on affected body parts only.

However, preliminary research has shown CBD to help with pain, stress, anxiety, and inflammation, among other benefits. However, more studies are needed to provide additional data on CBD’s capability to alleviate such health conditions and others.

House Appropriations Committee to Consider Hemp Guidelines this Summer.

Watching Florida's Stop Light on Marijuana

Earlier this summer, representatives in the U.S. House began working to reconsider policies, extend compliance times and clarify regulations for hemp production and consumption in the United States.

On June 30, 2021, the House Appropriations Committee advanced several hemp-related legislative items. In a report issued by the committee, industrial hemp production and marketing was deemed “an especially important opportunity for rural communities.”

The same committee urged the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) to clarify that hemp-related businesses should be eligible for all rural agricultural grants. “The intent of Congress in Public Law 115-334 was for industrial hemp to be eligible for all USDA programs, including Rural Development,” the committee report stated.

Department of Agriculture (USDA)

The report continues, “Industrial hemp can significantly benefit struggling rural economies. The Committee encourages Rural Development to ensure that industrial hemp is eligible for all competitive grant programs.” The committee also proposed a significant increase in agricultural funding with $16.7 million earmarked to support the federal hemp production program.

This is the same amount listed in the Fiscal Year 2022 budget proposed by Pres. Biden. The House Appropriations committee also included a recommendation to USDA and DEA for more clarification and coordination on the regulation of hemp extract.

The report stated that “the Committee directs USDA to coordinate directly with the DEA to present the industry with guidance and information on in-process extracted material” to address specific concerns brought up by hemp industry stakeholders.

CBD vs. THC: What Are the Differences? Why it Matters.

Concern about the dangers of marijuana abuse led to the banning of cannabinoids for use in the U.S. and many other countries in the 1930s and 1940s.

It took decades until they came to be considered again as compounds of value, and even now their uses are highly restricted. What Is Cannabis? Cannabis is a naturally growing herb that has been used for thousands of years to treat health conditions

. It’s also used in perfumes, soaps, candles and some foods. Cannabis originated in Central Asia, but today it’s grown worldwide. The term cannabis (popularly known as marijuana) is used to describe a product of the Cannabis sativa plant that is bred for its potent, sticky glands that are known as trichomes. These trichomes contain high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (called THC), which is the cannabinoid most known for its psychoactive properties. Cannabis Components Cannabinoids are a group of 21-carbon–containing terpenophenolic compounds produced uniquely by cannabis species. These plant-derived compounds may be referred to as phytocannabinoids. Although delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (known as THC) is the primary psychoactive ingredient, other known compounds with biologic activity are cannabinol, cannabidiol, cannabichromene, cannabigerol, tetrahydrocannabivarin and delta-8-THC. Cannabis vs. Hemp Hemp oil — obtained by pressing benefit-rich hemp seeds — is slightly different than cannabis oil, although they both come from the same genus, Cannabis, and the same species, Cannabis Sativa. The term hemp is used to describe a Cannabis Sativa plant that contains only trace amounts of THC. Hemp is a high-growing plant that’s commonly grown for industrial uses, such as oils and topical ointments, as well as fiber for clothing, construction, paper and more. Cannabis Oil vs. CBD Oil Cannabis oil and CBD oil are not the same thing. So what is CBD oil? Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has a high concentration of cannabidiol, while cannabis oil contains both CBD and THC. CBD oil is created by extracting CBD from either the cannabis or hemp plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. CBD does not produce a euphoric “high” or psychoactive effect because it doesn’t affect the same receptors as THC. CBD cannabis oil or CBD hemp oil are both said to be non-psychoactive. However, it gets confusing because any oil that is CBD-dominant is considered a CBD oil, and it produces different effects from THC-dominant cannabis oils. Most CBD oil comes from industrial hemp, which typically contains more CBD than marijuana. History According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, cannabis use dates back at least 3,000 years. It was introduced into the Western mindset in the 1840s by W.B. O’Shaughnessy, a surgeon who learned of its beneficial properties while working in India for the British East Indies Co. In 1937, the U.S. Treasury Department introduced the “Marihuana Tax Act,” which imposed a levy of $1 per ounce for “health-focused” use of cannabis and $100 per ounce for recreational use. This was opposed by physicians who were not required to pay a special tax for prescribing cannabis, use special order forms to obtain it and keep records detailing its professional use. The American Medical Association believed that evidence of cannabis’ harmful effects was limited and the act would prevent further research into its worth health-wise. By 1942, cannabis was removed from the U.S. Pharmacopoeia because of persistent concerns about its potential to cause harm. Final Thoughts While studies have certainly shown the benefits of cannabis used for some health purposes, there are many strains of cannabis, and they are not all equal. If you are using cannabis oil, make sure it is purchased through a reputable and lab-tested company. Last but not least, remember that cannabis is a very powerful oil, and only small amounts are needed for it to have a powerful effect on the body and mind.
