Members of the Texas House of Representatives advanced legislation seeking to expand cannabis products.

Members of the Texas House of Representatives advanced legislation today seeking to expand the pool of patients eligible to obtain state-licensed cannabis products.

Lawmakers voted by a nearly five to one margin in favor of the legislation, House Bill 1805. Specifically, it amends the Texas Compassionate Use Program so that physicians may recommend certain products containing fixed levels of THC to patients with “a condition that causes chronic pain, for which a physician would otherwise prescribe an opioid.” It also empowers state health officials, rather than lawmakers, to add additional qualifying conditions. Currently, patients with autism, ALS, cancer, incurable neurological disorders, intractable epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress, and seizure disorders are eligible to obtain low-THC medical cannabis products.

The measure also amends limits on the amount of THC that may be present in state-licensed products.

“I am thrilled to see the proposed legislation advancing through the legislative process,” said NORML State Policies Manager Jax James, who also serves as Executive Director for Texas NORML. “Medical cannabis is an objectively safer alternative to the array of pharmaceutical drugs that it could potentially replace. I urge my fellow Texans to voice their support for this important legislation and to reach out to their Senators to encourage their backing as it moves through the legislative process.”

Texas NORML 2013 Recap - Texas NORML

Texas lawmakers initially enacted legislation establishing the Compassionate Use Program in 2015. In 2021, legislators expanded the program to allow patients with PTSD and all forms of cancer to qualify for medical cannabis. That legislation also raised the limit on permissible levels of THC in licensed products from 0.5 percent to one percent.

Happy “April Rules” Month, 2023.

Happy “April Rules” Month 2023

April Rules is a colloquial term for April Fools, on current appropriate verbiage.

So, let it out. April does rule. It is the beginning of spring, and the hope for a new beginning, (aside from the tossed New Year’s resolutions).

This year the new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association excluded any and all marijuana testing for players per The Athletic.

Could the NFL soon follow suit?

It was three years ago that the NFL reduced potential penalties for marijuana use, in a move that many thought was a prelude to the elimination of testing for it altogether.

The NFL hosts franchises in many states where marijuana use is legal for medicinal and recreational use, but the “No Fun League” always fell back on the fact that it remains a controlled substance under federal law.

But now that more and more states are legalizing it, it seems the league might be moved to ban testing altogether, while still maintaining order among players who choose to indulge.

But the league’s current laws surrounding marijuana use and testing might not have anything to do with the substance itself, but rather, a political move. The NFL regards the marijuana ban as part of collective bargaining. This means that, before they get rid of it, they want something in return from the NFL Players Association.

Some believe this has already happened, or the league just refuses to enforce any violations, but it’s simply not the case. The NFL still levies harsh fines for positive tests, and multiple violations still mark players for the treatment program and potential suspensions.

But for how much longer?

Too soon to tell, but there’s no question the NBA’s decision to ban marijuana testing for players is a move other leagues will be monitoring closely.

Weed Legalized in North Carolina? Medical Marijuana Efforts on Track for Vote.

Is Weed Not Yet Legalized in North Carolina?  Medical Marijuana Efforts Gain Traction.

Story by Morgan Paxhia

Is weed legalized in North Carolina? Not currently, but efforts are being made by state lawmakers to pass a medical marijuana bill.

Republican state senator Bill Rabon refiled a medical marijuana legalization bill in late January that, if passed, will allow patients with several qualifying conditions, including cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and epilepsy, among others, the ability to buy and possess cannabis from licensed dispensaries. A similar bill was blocked last year, but in its current form, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. It still has to make it through a full floor vote in the Senate and House of Representatives, but Republican House Speaker Tim Moore said in an interview that he “would not be surprised at all if that bill moved.  I think the odds are more likely than not that something will happen on that.”

Image result for North Carolina is making great progress toward establishing its medical cannabis market

According to early looks at the licensing and qualifying conditions included in the bill, North Carolina is making great progress toward establishing its medical cannabis market. Initial plans within the state are for 10 vertically integrated licenses to be approved that will hold up to eight dispensaries each, essentially allowing for 80 doors statewide. Previously, we have seen thriving operators born from a similar tight license count model combined with limited medical conditions and a good addressable market.

We’re reminded of a small-scale version of the Florida market, which has grown massively over the years. This will likely result in a ballot initiative for adult-use weed legalization in  Florida in 2024. There will be a lively amount of interest when this is all in place and the application process begins.

Right on North Carolina’s heels comes additional legislative progress in South Carolina. This week, the Senate approved a bill for the legalization of medical cannabis in the state. We covered the potential for this bill to progress earlier this year and are seeing the momentum carry forward.

The movement to legalize medical cannabis in North and South Carolina reminds us of James Tayler and his wonderful song, “Carolina in My Mind.” We are rooting for the Carolinas to bring jobs, tax revenue and legal choice for the good people across both states.

The South shall rise again, but this time as a growth engine for legal cannabis.

Twitter allows ads from legal cannabis companies.

This past October, while Elon Musk completed his ownership of Twitter, speculation swirled around the possibility of the social media platform becoming more cannabis friendly. Last week, the cannabis industry received confirmation of that, as Twitter announced a policy change that will allow U.S. cannabis companies to advertise on its platform.

Twitter is proving to be the social media platform most aligned with the legal cannabis industry, and we are very excited by its move to create a path toward legal cannabis advertising. Mainstream advertising platforms have been reluctant to promote an industry that is federally illegal and have expressed concern about how to validate potential advertisers as legal businesses.

UPDATE 2023

The North Carolina Senate voted on Tuesday to legalize marijuana use for medical purposes, giving strong bipartisan support for the second year in a row to an idea that its supporters say would give relief to those with debilitating or life-ending illnesses.

After little debate, the chamber voted 36-10 to give initial support to legislation that would create a structure by which physicians could essentially prescribe marijuana to their patients if they believe the health benefits outweigh the risks. Patients with over a dozen conditions could qualify — including epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-traumatic stress disorder — as well as those with terminal illnesses or who are receiving hospice care.

The proposal is almost identical to a bill the Senate passed last June by a similar margin, which then stalled in the House. This year, Republican House Speaker Tim Moore has said there’s some support for the idea in his chamber. The measure needs one more Senate vote on Wednesday before it moves to the House.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Marijuana legalization in North Carolina for medical purposes is advancing again within the state Senate, less than a year after a very similar measure setting a structure for its sale and consumption passed the chamber by a wide margin.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Tuesday for the legislation, which was refiled last month as the new two-year General Assembly session began. The measure cleared the panel on a voice vote after the passage of several amendments, one of which is designed to ensure sales access in rural areas.

Joe Biden upset people still remember that infamous marijuana comment ...

While the new version is likely to clear the full Senate sometime next week, the future of medical marijuana in North Carolina will depend on its level of support in the House. That chamber declined to take up the Senate measure in 2022. Speaker Tim Moore, a Republican, suggested recently that support for legalizing pot for the treatment of medical conditions is possible given the right restrictions in the measure.

Sen. Bill Rabon, a Brunswick County Republican who shepherded the previous and current measures, has pitched to colleagues the legalization of smoking or consuming cannabis as a way to give relief to people with pain or illnesses and from whom their doctors say they could benefit.

House interest “seems to be growing, and I’m very happy to hear that,” said Rabon, a cancer survivor who as a chairman of the Senate Rules Committee is a top lieutenant to Senate leader Phil Berger.

The state’s Democratic governor, Roy Cooper, has pushed lawmakers in North Carolina to reform its cannabis laws.

In October, following President Joe Biden’s pardon to individuals with federal marijuana convictions, Cooper called for the decriminalization of pot in North Carolina.

“Conviction of simple possession can mar people’s records for life and maybe even prevent them from getting a job,” Cooper said at the time.

“North Carolina should take steps to end this stigma,” the governor added.

In his announcement of the pardons, Biden urged “all Governors to do the same with regard to state offenses.”

“As I often said during my campaign for President, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit. Criminal records for marijuana possession have also imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. And while white and Black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionate rates,” Biden said in a statement at the time.

“Federal law currently classifies marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, the classification meant for the most dangerous substances.  This is the same schedule as for heroin and LSD, and even higher than the classification of fentanyl and methamphetamine – the drugs that are driving our overdose epidemic,” Biden added.

A Quick Guide to the Psychedelic Mushroom Boom

The majority of the psychedelics community has rarely made contact with the world of venture capital and high-growth startups.

Image result for psychedelic mushrooms legal

This is dangerous because it doesn’t allow for those that work with psychedelic substances to understand what the next 10 years will bring their way… and as of right now the future doesn’t look too bright.

A Venture Capital (VC) firm, is in its simplest form just an entity that invests the money of rich folks into the companies that it believes will become the most financially valuable. There are of course other considerations for some investing groups such as: patient outcomes, environmental impact and sustainability, and general ESG methodologies. But for the most part VC firms work to provide a , financial gain,to their investors by providing cash to startups that want to grow their business fast.

Let’s say that you are a psychotherapist who’s been running their own clinic for a few years. You were trained by MAPS to do psychedelic assisted therapy and have incorporated the service into your practice. Business is booming. Everyone wants access to your transformative care.

Perhaps you want to open up a second clinic where you can hire on some more therapists with the proper training, but you don’t have the money saved up yet to open up another location.

You could wait a few years, go to a bank to get a loan, or you could seek out an investment.

If you choose to go raise money for your venture you’ll be met with a lot of questions most of which will be pointed at one thing: scale. Most investors won’t put down capital for you to just open up one additional clinic. You’ll need to describe a vision of growing fast and scaling your brand to be the most impactful, widely distributed clinic on the planet.

Why? Because investors lose money on most investments that they make. Almost all of their returns are made from the few investments that knock it out of the park. The billion dollar unicorn that can grow their money more than 100x.

None of this is to say that good companies that can generate a high return don’t exist, but it’s very difficult to find that balance. Within our current system, companies need to compete with one another. That competition plays out through cutting costs, moving quickly, and oftentimes deprioritizing people, the environment, and quality.

It’s also very difficult to prioritize long term results. Every VC firm collects a new pool of money every few years called a . Most funds only run for 7 years, 10 years on the long end. Within 10 years you need to see a company sold off or going public for you to cash out and see the fruits of your investment. A company that has a 25 year mission to revolutionize patient care, but has to suffer losses for the first 10? Not going to happen.

As I mentioned earlier, there are strategies for forming firms around values, impact, and longer term results. But it’s extremely difficult. A firm can focus on investing in B Corps, but B Corp status is very time and resource intensive to pursue. There are a few companies in the space that have done it including MAPS and The Third Wave, but it’ll be a long road before we see a meaningful percentage of psychedelics companies adopt this style of doing business.

All of us from Auryn Fund, to Field Trip, to our own Tabula Rasa Ventures are trying hard to make sure that the future of this industry reflects the incredible community that’s built it. But we need to be having more open conversations along with detailed strategies for how to do investment right.

Quick Guide to Psychedelic Startups

How to Raise Capital for a Psychedelic Startup: Industry Info You Need to Know

In the recent past, psychedelics were considered dangerous drugs. Today, more and more scientists recognize their medical potential. Investors are already investing in the young industry.

Psychedelic drugs have a complicated history. They had a heyday in the 1960s but then fell into disuse. Recent research has partially brought psychedelics back. Today, scientists see them as promising compounds for treating many diseases.

Given the above, it is quite fair to say that the era of the so-called psychedelic renaissance has begun. Since 2020, the number of psychedelic companies has started to increase greatly.

Let’s take a look at the reasons for the increased demand in the psychedelic industry. Learn how to raise capital dealing with this type of business.

Psychedelics Boom

Despite Covid-19 and the collapse of the economy, investors are starting to pay attention to this industry. They bet that psychedelic-derived drugs can become a real business and help millions of people. Researchers, activists, and journalists have been the driving force behind the psychedelic renaissance.

Benefits of Psychedelics

Many startup companies are developing drugs based on psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms), LSD, MDMA, and ibogaine. They are banned in the United States, except ketamine, which is also used in the development of such medicine. These companies hope to develop a psychedelic therapy treatment for a wide range of mental illnesses. They include depression, anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Medical regulators are also gradually turning toward psychedelics, as they show potential in treating depression. In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called Usona Institute’s psilocybin program for major depressive disorder “breakthrough therapy.”

However, researchers will have a tough road to winning FDA approval.

How Medical Companies Turned to Psychedelics

In early 2020, the drug company Mind Medicine (MMEDF) went public. It received the financial backing of Kevin O’Leary and the guidance of cannabis entrepreneur Bruce Linton. In one interview, O’Leary explained his reasons for investing in psychedelics and talked about the lagging efforts to treat growing psychiatric disorders.

In 2013, Linton became a co-founder of Canopy Growth (CGC), the largest cannabis company in the U.S. He left in 2019 and later became director of Mind Medicine. The main goal of the company is similar to Compass Pathways. They plan to bring psychedelics to market and conduct research on LSD, mushrooms, and other drugs.

Investing in Psychedelics

Venture capital investors were at the centre of the psychedelic boom. In early 2020, startups in the field said they were beginning to see signs of growing investor appetite.

Venture capital firms focused on psychedelic companies soon began to appear. Insider’s list of the top 11 venture capitalists in the field shows $139.8 million invested in such startups in just a few years.

Kevin O’Leary and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel make big bets on magic mushrooms. Their big plans for mind-altering mushrooms have nothing to do with festivals or raves but deal with biotech instead.

Negev Capital, a psychedelic medical intervention investment fund, invests in companies that are developing new drugs to treat mental disorders based on psychedelic compounds. Negev has invested in 20 psychedelic drug development companies and has more than $30mln under the management

The fund recently doubled down on its substantial investment in Small Pharma Inc, a neuropharmaceutical company specialising in developing new treatments for mental illness with a focus on depression.

Another representative of psychedelic medicine is ATAI Life Sciences. It’s a “drug discovery platform” from Germany. The company invests in research of possible uses of psychedelics and other drugs for medical purposes. As of January 2021, they had raised more than $210 million, much of it from Thiel Capital and Christian Angermayer.

ATAI Life Sciences has taken a majority stake in Recognify, which was founded by Thomas Südhof, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. Recognify’s aim is to develop drugs to help treat schizophrenia. The company focuses on cognitive impairments (CIAS) that interfere with verbal learning and memory. Their new drug, RL-007, although not derived from psychoactive compounds, has already undergone positive clinical trials.

Atai Life Sciences Goes Public; Now the Largest Publicly Traded ...

Another company is Compass Pathways (CMPS), which went public in the United States back in September 2020. The British company, invested in by Thiel and Angermayer, has patented a synthetic form of psilocybin. It helps people with treatment-resistant depression.

The company launched clinical trials that involved 233 patients at several sites across Europe and North America. It is the most rigorous trial on psilocybin, which adds great weight to previous, smaller studies of the drug. In November 2018, FDA called the company’s treatment “breakthrough therapy.” This means the approval may come soon if trials are successful. Compass will start Phase 3 trials in the near future.

Cybin is a biotech company focused on the development of psychedelic therapeutics. In October 2021, it completed its 74th pre-clinical study of psychedelic compounds for potential therapeutic applications in several psychiatric disorders. Over 50 new compounds have been evaluated with the help of experienced contract research organizations.

Image result for Cybin is a biotech company focused on the development of psychedelic therapeutics. In October 2021,

The company seeks to build a portfolio of world-class psychedelic molecules that could become commercially viable drug candidates for both internal development and future partnerships.

The current psychedelic boom is only the beginning of the industry’s development and expansion. Considering investors’ attention to this type of medicine, more startups will emerge in the future. Active research on psychedelics has resumed in recent years, after its peak in the 1950s and 1970s. It may lead to great scientific progress and heal millions of people.

What Cannabis Can (and Can’t) do for Chronic Pain. Pot for Pain Relief?

What Cannabis Can (and Can’t) do for Chronic Pain. Pot for Pain Relief?

(Story by Karen Weintraub, USA TODAY) reprinted 1/26/2023.

A growing, but still incomplete body of research suggests the cannabis plant, the source of marijuana, can help fight some kinds of pain.

Rob Sims grew up hearing stories about what opioid addiction could do. The former Detroit Lions guard, whose father, Mickey, also played in the NFL, watched a number of his dad’s friends get hooked. Some died. He vowed his own story would be different.

Then, playing for the Seattle Seahawks in 2008, early in his pro football career, Sims tore a pectoralis muscle in his chest. Primed for his best year ever, Sims was sidelined.

After surgery, he received an open-ended prescription for opioids. “Take when you have pain,” the bottle read. “That’s seared in my memory,” he said. As a football player, “I have pain all the time.”

Scared by the lesson he had learned as a child and with little to do besides focus on his recovery, he remembers thinking: “This could go in a bad way.”

That’s when he turned to marijuana.

It remains unclear whether cannabis can be an effective treatment for pain. Plenty of circumstantial evidence supports the idea, but exactly how, what kinds of products and what can be expected from them has yet to be determined.

“There’s some caveats before it’s ready for broad, prime-time usage for chronic pain,” said Dr. Devan Kansagara, a professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University and a staff physician at the VA Portland.

It’s possible that cannabis helps with the psychological aspects of pain, said Dr. Nora Volkow, head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “Cannabis may improve pain indirectly, for instance, through decreasing anxiety so that someone may be able to deal with pain better,” she said.

One recent examination of previous studies found the benefits of cannabis were equal to the benefits of a placebo, which means that if people thought it would help, it did.

“There’s very limited evidence out there to support that cannabis is effective against pain,” said Karin Jensen, the Swedish neuroscientist who led the study. So far, most of the information showing its usefulness is anecdotal.

“People who use cannabis to relieve pain may have the experience that it helps – there is no doubt about that,” she said. “What’s needed is solid scientific evidence to determine how much of the relief is due to the cannabis and how much is due to other things, such as the placebo effect.”

The general public is already largely convinced.

Marijuana remains illegal in 12 states, but as of 2019, 18% of U.S. adults reported using cannabis at least once in the previous year, and 4% to 5% use it daily or nearly daily, Kansagara said.

In a 2017 study, the majority of people who used medical marijuana or self-medicated with the drug said they did so to relieve pain, and 65% of those who requested medical marijuana licenses said they wanted it to treat pain.

The marijuana plant provides a wide range of chemicals, including THC, which has psychotropic effects.

The marijuana plant provides a wide range of chemicals, including THC, which has psychotropic effects/

But cannabis comes with cautions.

At least 5% of Americans ages 12 and up abuse or are dependent on marijuana, and the risk for dependence increases the younger someone starts. Marijuana use directly affects parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision-making, coordination, emotion and reaction time. And long-term or frequent marijuana use, particularly at higher doses, has been linked to increased risk of psychosis or schizophrenia.

It’s not possible to predict ahead of time who will react badly to marijuana, said Dr. Charles Berde, co-founder of a pediatric pain clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital.

THC, the part of the plant that has psychotropic effects, “has narrow uses for nausea and appetite stimulation in patients with severe weight loss due to AIDS or cancer,” but the data for CBD for treatment of chronic pain is “murky,” Berde said. “All the more reason to be hesitant to prescribe it.”

Cannabis and pain relief

When a body is in pain, the brain releases its own pain relievers. There are special receptors in the brain designed to take in these natural cannabinoids and offer relief.

Ingesting or inhaling weed fills up those receptors, too.

Providing more cannabinoids than these receptors can accept overloads them making the person’s own internal cannabinoids ineffective, said Dr. Jordan Tishler, a cannabis specialist physician in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and founder and president of the Association of Cannabinoid Specialists.

That’s why higher doses don’t provide any additional pain relief compared with lower ones and can have “all sorts of risks,” he said. Side effects from cannabis can include increased heart rate, dizziness, impaired concentration and memory, slower reaction times and, more rarely, increased risk of heart attack and stroke and dependence.

Tishler said many patients come to him taking far too much cannabis, which increases the risk for side effects. He works to convince them that 5 mg to 20 mg a day will treat their pain better than the 200 mg they’re using.

Cannabis is now sold in many different forms.

Cannabis is now sold in many different forms.

“Just because (cannabis) doesn’t lead to breaking the law and incarceration and those sorts of troubles doesn’t mean people can’t have their lives significantly altered by getting overly involved with this particular substance,” he said.

There are also open questions about cannabis, including whether the pain-killing benefits seen in short-term studies will last. Some painkillers, like opioids, can actually make people more sensitive to pain. It’s not yet clear whether cannabis can have this effect.

“You’d like to see what happens with these products over a longer period of time, ideally,” Kansagara said. “I would like to see that before recommending wholesale to patients.”

Although legalization and decriminalization are making a difference, cannabis remains hard to study. Until recent years, it was extremely difficult to gain access to cannabis for research, and there was little federal funding for such work. In early December, President Joe Biden signed a law that will make it easier to research cannabis.

Gold-standard studies compare a treatment versus a placebo, but it’s impossible to keep people in the dark about whether they’re getting high, said Dr. Donald Abrams, an oncologist and professor emeritus at University of California, San Francisco, who studies cannabis.

When Abrams studied cannabis use in his HIV patients, some critics thought patients must be too stoned to notice their pain. But Abrams said the patients reported that it did alleviate their pain.

Dosages of cannabis aren’t standardized, which adds to the difficulty of comparing one study against another, he said.

That’s why trials of cannabis for pain relief have shown mixed results, said Wil Ngwa, an associate professor of radiation oncology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, who’s working to create such standards for drug trials.

This lack of standardization also means people have to use trial and error to find an effective dose for them, according to Staci Gruber, who directs the Marijuana Investigations for Neuroscientific Discovery (MIND) program at McLean Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital outside Boston.

In one study, Gruber followed 37 volunteers using cannabis for chronic pain. After six months of treatment, participants reported lower levels of pain, better sleep, more coherence and less use of conventional painkillers.

‘Positives, not negatives’

Sims experienced the same benefits.

Daily marijuana use after his pec injury helped cut the pain, allowing him to lift more weight and recover faster. “I was able to come back stronger than I was before.”

Playing NFL ball, Sims said, is like living through a train wreck every Sunday. The best players – the ones whose careers last the longest, he said – “have learned how to recover quicker and get ready for that next train wreck.”

During his career, marijuana helped Sims rebound and improved his sleep, which allowed him to push his workouts.

Asked about side effects from his marijuana use, Sims pointed to his athletic and financial successes. “I wouldn’t call those side effects,” he said, laughing. “I see positives, not negatives.”

In 2021, Sims co-founded the cannabis company Primitiv Group with fellow former Lion Calvin Johnson Jr. Sims and Johnson acknowledge they used cannabis during their professional careers, though there was a zero tolerance policy then, which has loosened only slightly since. Both men believe the restrictions should be lifted.

About a decade ago, Sims persuaded his wife, Natalie, to try cannabis, when a bout with the bowel syndrome Crohn’s disease left her on a morphine drip in an emergency room.

“This can’t be how we live for the rest of our lives,” he told her. She uses cannabis now and finds relief, Sims said.

“It made me very passionate about pain and help for pain.”

Challenges of cannabis care

Cannabis doesn’t make pain go away, like Advil might get rid of a headache, Tishler said.

Instead, “it makes it so it doesn’t bother you so much,” he said. “It divorces the pain from the suffering.”

Whether it’s the THC or the CBD in cannabis or both that might be helpful against pain remains an open question, Kansagara said. THC is what makes people feel “high.” CBD appears to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be useful to some.

Smoking joints isn’t a good approach for relieving chronic pain, said Tishler, who recommends his patients use edibles instead. The effect of inhaled cannabis wears off in three to four hours, while a gummy might last eight to 12 hours.

The yo-yo effect, when pain comes and goes over a few hours, can exacerbate suffering, Tishler said. “Short-acting actually turns out to be a bad approach in general in pain management.”

In Massachusetts, where medical cannabis has been legal since 2013 and recreational since 2016, doctors are more comfortable giving their patients permission to use cannabis, Tishler said. But they rarely bring it up themselves.

So, Tishler is trying to educate his peers. “If you were thinking the patient needs opioids, think cannabis first. Don’t wait for the patient to bring it up – it’s your job to bring it up,” he tells them.

Similarly, he’d like to get cancer patients on cannabis early in their care, rather than waiting until agony sets in. “Once people are at the end of their rope, things are worse and harder to treat than if we had started when things were still kind of OK.”

Most of the advice on what product to use now comes from the patient care advocates or “budtenders” who work behind the counter at dispensaries, Gruber noted with some concern. They typically don’t know the person’s medical history or history of cannabis use or whether they use other substances such as alcohol, other drugs or prescription medication. Product labels can often be misleading about their THC and CBD content.

The trial-and-error approach can be difficult and challenging for patients with major medical problems.

“Knowing what’s in your weed is critical, but also how you’re going to respond to it is an important consideration. And that’s something we don’t spend a lot of time on,” Gruber said. “You have to educate patients. They’re desperate for it, but it’s not easy, because we’re all different and cannabis is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution.”

Research may change future use.

For cannabis to reach its full potential as a painkiller, more research is needed, experts say.

“It’s really untapped right now, because of that lack of research,” Johnson said.

That’s why NFL players and owners have been supporting cannabis research. Owners have donated more than $1 million this year to two cannabis research programs.

“We need to become better educated about all these issues,” said Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer.

Ngwa, at Hopkins, collaborates with Sims and Johnson to lead some of that research.

He’s also looking at better ways to treat cancer pain with cannabis.

His studies suggest that not enough of the painkiller gets to a tumor when the cannabis is inhaled or ingested, so he has been exploring smart-drug delivery systems than can target the drug directly to the tumor. So far, he has tested only pancreatic tumors but hopes to rapidly expand to other cancer types.

Ngwa is concerned that preliminary research like his will encourage people to self-medicate, taking doses that may not be helpful. “You really have to wait for the clinical trials, but when people are desperate, they just do (anything). I definitely worry about that,” he said.

Until more is known, Sims will keep up his cannabis routine.

Now 39, he has dropped 50 pounds from his 320-pound playing weight, which has helped reduce the lingering bone-on-bone pain in his right knee. He rubs a Primitiv topical on it knee every day.

“My passion behind the plant and what it’s done for my family reigns supreme.”

Paying Taxes With Duffel Bags Of Cash Like Scarface. SAFE Banking – It’s Not About Legal Pot.

As the cannabis industry holds its breath while waiting to hear if marijuana banking reform will be part of a must-pass omnibus spending bill, James Hagedorn, a CEO of the lawn care giant Scotts Miracle-Gro (NYSE: SMG) shared

Paying Taxes with Duffel Bags of Cash Like Scarface, Scotts Miracle-Gro CEO On Need For SAFE Banking Act© Provided by Benzinga

his thoughts on the importance of this bill.

Tap to activate or exit full screen

Scotts Miracle-Gro’s 2014 development of subsidiary Hawthorne Gardening Company “to meet the demands of hydroponic (cannabis) was considered one of the first large investments by a major U.S. corporation in the marijuana space. Nevertheless, Hagedorn wants to see the SAFE Banking Act passed for more than merely personal reasons.

It’s Not About Legal Pot

In an exclusive interview with Fox Business, Hagedorn pointed out that the idea behind the banking legislation is not to make pot legal but to allow businesses that represent the legal cannabis market to use banks, instead of having cash everywhere.

“It’s very dangerous. It’s inefficient. It’s really dysfunctional for the banking industry, not to be able to take this money in, allow people to deposit in, make capital investments in illegal businesses,” Hagedorn said.

The interview came on the heels of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling the banking bill a “poison pill.”

It looks like the SAFE Act needs the support of both McConnell, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the reporter said and asked Hagedorn what he’d say to them if they were listening.

“Well, first of all, I think there are 60 votes to get this out of the Senate. It’s been passed multiple times on a bipartisan basis in the House with a lot of Republican support, and there are some really good people out there. The co-sponsor on the Republican side in the Senate is a guy named Steve Daines. He’s a really good Republican. I’m a Republican, out of Montana, and what he told me is – ‘Jim, I’m not in favor of marijuana,” Hagedorn said. “What I’m not in favor of is dysfunction and banking. In my state, by voter initiative, they made it legal. And if it’s going to be legal, my citizens should be able to bank.’”Tap to activate or exit full screen

Hagedorn continued. “This is not about pot. This is about dysfunction in banking, people today have to pay taxes on legal businesses with duffel bags of cash and counting machines like Scarface. It’s not the way it’s supposed to be in America. There are almost a half million people that are employed in this space. Americans that vote. They have problems getting mortgages this way. These are all people who are working in legal industries. This is dysfunctional and bad, and all the Senate has to do is allow legal businesses legal access to banking. “

Ifs the bill passes during the lame-duck session, Hagedorn says he doesn’t believe that big financial names like JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) and Fifth Third (NASDAQ: FITB), are going to embrace the industry in the same instant because there’s “a lot of sensitivity about compliance.”

While many believe the SAFE Act is a small step in much-needed marijuana reform, Hagedorn agreed with Senator Danes that it is indeed a big step forward in rationalizing banking for legal businesses.

“Let’s remember one thing when you have a lot of cash, it brings crime. There are people killed every day, where they have a lot of cash lying around. And people have to take this money in cash.”

Price Action

Scotts Miracle Grow shares were trading 0.39% higher at $48.50 per share during Monday’s pre-market session.

UPDATE ON OMNIBUS SPENDING BILL

Marijuana advocates were given a massive setback after the Senate did not include a provision to remove federal restrictions on cannabis businesses from receiving banking services in the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill.

The provision, which would have been modeled after the House’s SAFE Banking Act, was excluded from the Senate’s spending bill, likely thanks to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has been a fierce opponent of the legislation.

The CEO of the U.S. Cannabis Council, a pro-marijuana group, said of the provision’s exclusion, “To say that we are disappointed is an understatement.”

US Cannabis Council Names Cannabis Veteran Khadijah Tribble as CEO

August 19, 2022

WASHINGTON–Today, the US Cannabis Council (USCC) named Khadijah Tribble, a leading figure in the cannabis reform movement and expert on equity and inclusion, as the organization’s CEO. Tribble succeeds Steven Hawkins, who led USCC since its founding in February 2021.

“We thank Steven Hawkins for his integral role in launching USCC, and we are thrilled to welcome Khadijah Tribble’s to the role of CEO at this critical juncture for the cannabis industry,” said Jessica Billingsley, chair of USCC and CEO of Akerna. “She is deeply respected for her leadership, expertise and wide-ranging experience and is well-positioned to advance our mission of ending prohibition and creating an equitable, values-based industry.”

Tribble serves as Senior Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at USCC member company Curaleaf, a role she will continue in during her interim term as CEO. She previously founded Marijuana Matters, a cannabis education and advocacy incubator, and served as CEO of the Marijuana Policy Trust, which helps develop and run DEI programs in the cannabis industry. Tribble, who has advocated for fair and equitable policies on behalf of marginalized communities throughout her career, also serves on USCC’s DEI Task Force. She holds a master’s degree from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“The US Cannabis Council unites my deep commitment to cannabis legalization with my passion for addressing the harms of prohibition,” said Tribble. “My priority is advancing meaningful cannabis reforms through Congress this year that will provide the foundation for achieving our ultimate goal of federal descheduling while fostering an equitable and inclusive legal cannabis industry.”

Since launching last year, USCC has established itself as the leading voice for cannabis reform in Washington, DC. The organization has brought cannabis industry CEOs to meet with lawmakers in Congress, partnered with the sponsors of leading cannabis bills to advance reform and launched a campaign to advance passage of the SAFE Banking Act. Earlier this year, USCC launched its DEI Task Force with leaders in law, business and civil rights and partnered with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to create an internship program for Black college students and recent graduates at leading cannabis companies and organizations.
