Cannabidiol (CBD) is often covered in the media, and you may see it touted as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee. You can even buy a CBD-infused sports bra. But what exactly is CBD? And why is it so popular?
How is cannabidiol different from marijuana, cannabis and hemp?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. One of hundreds of components in marijuana, CBD does not cause a “high” by itself. According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD. “Is cannabidiol legal?
Hemp is thought to be one of the oldest plants used for textiles and is also one of the fastest growing plants. There is evidence that h
emp was used 9000 years ago in ancient Çatalhöyük (Turkey).
Hemp is a ‘strain’ of the cannabis Sativa plant that has different properties from what we think of as cannabis. However, hemp is actually the same plant that produces less of the psychoactive chemical THC. In the USA, ‘industrial hemp’ contains 0.3% or less THC content by dry weight whereas in Australia the minimum standard is 0.35% or less THC. While hemp still has some THC, it’s impossible to smoke enough hemp to get you high.
There are five parts of the plant (the inner fibres (hurd), the outer fibres (bast), stalk, buds and the seeds) that can be used. Today hemp can produce resources such as food, clothing, building materials, rope and even fuel.
In conclusion, cannabis and hemp are the same plant species but have different chemical properties and uses.

It mostly affects women, and currently there’s no known cure for the condition. However, treatment options are available that focus on pain management.
There are currently no published studies on fibromyalgia that look at the effects of CBD on its own. However, some research does look at the effects of cannabis, which may contain multiple cannabinoids, on fibromyalgia.
The results have been mixed. More human studies are needed.
Earlier studies
A 2009 reviewTrusted Source found that CBD can be used to relieve neuropathic pain. The researchers concluded that cannabinoids such as CBD might be a useful adjunct to other pain medications.
A 2011 study looked at 56 people with fibromyalgia. Most of the participants were women.
Members of the study comprised two groups:
One group was comprised of 28 study participants who weren’t cannabis users.
The second group was comprised of 28 study participants who were cannabis users. The frequency of their cannabis use, or the amount of cannabis they used, varied.
Two hours after using cannabis, the cannabis users experienced benefits such as:
reduced pain and stiffness
an increase in sleepiness
They also had slightly higher mental health scores than the non-users.
2019 Dutch study
A 2019 Dutch study looked at the effect of cannabis on 20 women with fibromyalgia. Over the course of the study, each participant received four types of cannabis:
an unspecified amount of a placebo variety, which contained no CBD or THC
200 milligrams (mg) of a variety with high amounts of both CBD and THC (Bediol)
200 mg of a variety with high amounts of CBD and low amounts of THC (Bedrolite)
100 mg of a variety with low amounts of CBD and high amounts of THC (Bedrocan)
The researchers found that the spontaneous pain scores of people using the placebo variety were similar to the spontaneous pain scores of people using some of the non-placebo varieties.
However, Bediol, which is high in CBD and THC, brought relief to a greater number of people than the placebo did. It caused a 30 percent reduction of spontaneous pain in 18 of the 20 participants. The placebo caused a 30 percent reduction of spontaneous pain in 11 participants.
Use of Bediol or Bedrocan, both high-THC varieties, significantly improved pressure pain thresholds when compared to the placebo.
Bedrolite, which is high in CBD and low in THC, didn’t show any evidence of being able to relieve spontaneous or evoked pain.
2019 Israeli study
In a 2019 Israeli study, hundreds of people with fibromyalgia were observed over a period of at least 6 months. Of the participants, 82 percent were women.
The study participants received guidance from nurses before taking medical cannabis. The nurses provided advice on:
All the participants started with a low dosage of cannabis, and dosages were increased gradually over the course of the study. The median approved dosage of cannabis started at 670 mg a day.
At 6 months, the median approved dosage of cannabis was 1,000 mg a day. The median approved dosage of THC was 140 mg, and the median approved dosage of CBD was 39 mg a day.
The researchers admitted that the study had limitations. For instance, they were only able to follow up with about 70 percent of participants. The use of so many different strains also made it difficult to compare the effects of CBD-rich and THC-rich strains.
However, they still concluded that medical cannabis was a safe and effective treatment for fibromyalgia.
At the beginning of the study, 52.5 percent of participants, or 193 people, described their pain level as high. At the 6-month follow-up, only 7.9 percent of those who responded, or 19 people, reported high levels of pain.
If you want to avoid the psychoactive effects of marijuana, you can find CBD products that contain only trace amounts of THC. If you live in a place where recreational or medical marijuana is legal, you can find CBD products that contain higher concentrations of THC.
Although they each have benefits separately, CBD and TCH likely work best when combined. Experts refer to this synergy, or interaction, as the “entourage effect.”
Smoking or vaping. If you want to relieve immediate pain, smoking CBD-rich cannabis is the quickest way to reduce symptoms. Effects can last up to 3 hours. Smoking or vaping allows you to directly inhale CBD from the cannabis plant, absorbing the chemical into your bloodstream and lungs.
Edibles.Edibles are foods cooked with the cannabis plant, or cannabis-infused oil or butter. It’ll take longer to experience symptom relief, but the effects of edibles can last for up to 6 hours.
Oil extracts.Oils can be applied topically, taken orally, or dissolved under the tongue and absorbed in mouth tissues.
Topicals. CBD oils can be infused into topical creams or balms and applied directly to the skin. These CBD products can be an effective option for reducing inflammation and helping with external pain.
There may be respiratory risks to smoking or vaping marijuana. People with asthma or lung conditions shouldn’t use this method.
You should also follow dosage instructions carefully, especially with edibles, to avoid the negative side effects of taking too much.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term, or chronic, condition. It causes symptoms such as:
musculoskeletal pain, or pain in the muscles and bones
tenderness
general fatigue
sleep and cognitive disturbances
This condition can be hard to understand, even for healthcare professionals. Its symptoms mimic those of other conditions, and there are no tests to definitively confirm a diagnosis. As a result, fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed.
In the past, some healthcare professionals even questioned whether fibromyalgia was real. Today, it’s much better understood.
Around 4 million adults in the United StatesTrusted Source, or around 2 percent, have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Most fibromyalgia cases are diagnosed in females. Most people get diagnosed in middle age, but fibromyalgia can also affect children.
Some of the stigmas that previously surrounded fibromyalgia have eased, but it can still be challenging to treat. Medications, therapy, and lifestyle changes can help you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
You may also experience remission-type periods in which your pain and fatigue improve.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

the plural of desideratum:
“Happily-ever- after” and “eternal love” appear to be the desiderata of the current generation, to whom “fat chance” say those of us who are older, wiser, and more curmudgeonly.

— Better clothing, better food, better gadgets…is there anything hemp can’t do? Today, reports on the benefits of hemp-based batteries and how a group of American and Canadian researchers used hemp bast fiber (the inner bark of the plant that usually ends up in landfill) to develop a battery that has been used in cars and power tools.
The Hemp Plant is now being recognized for 20,000 uses, many medicinal.
Hemp batteries are referred to as supercapacitors. Accordingly , “it’s best to think of a battery-powered car or truck. They need a steady amount of electric energy as they drive down a country road. However, if that car stops at a red light, the battery will need a big burst of energy when the light turns green to get going again. Lithium-ion batteries are great at storing energy for a long time and expending it slowly. However, they are not so good at rapidly releasing a large amount of energy, like what a car needs when a red light turns green.” Supercapacitors are good at performing this function. “These types of batteries can discharge their entire load of energy quickly to provide a big boost of energy. That’s exactly what an electric vehicle needs to accelerate quickly. While supercapacitors don’t hold a charge for long, they can absorb regenerative energy from braking.”
The research team, led by Chemical Engineer Dr. David Mitlin of Clarkson University, NY, believed “replacing lithium batteries with hemp would make electric cars and other gadgets” we use in everyday life more sustainable. Who doesn’t want sustainability? Especially if you’re one of the lucky ones to have an electric car. Most auto batteries today are made from lithium-ion, an expensive material, so replacing lithium batteries with hemp would make electric cars more sustainable.
Now let’s take a look at the benefits of hemp-based batteries.
· High Energy Density: Energy density refers to the amount of energy a battery can hold based on its weight. The higher energy density a battery has, the stronger the battery. A 2016 reported study found that hemp-based batteries contained an energy density of 19.8 Watt-hours per kilogram.
· Cost: One of the benefits of using hemp over graphene is that hemp batteries can be made using hemp waste that hemp farmers don’t need. This makes hemp both easy to find and much cheaper than graphene. Over the next decades, the world is going to need a lot of batteries to power its vehicles, homes, and cities. Cheaper batteries made with hemp could keep the cost of this transition much lower.
· Availability: Graphene is a versatile “it” material that is finding its way in everything from silicon chips to solar cells and, of course, batteries. However, one of the biggest downsides of graphene is that it is difficult to make in large quantities. Hemp, on the other hand, can grow to maturity in a few months and is known for its ability to grow in many different types of soil, including soils that cannot sustain other crops.
· Superconductivity: Batteries need to conduct electricity with as little resistance as possible. The more resistant a material is to conductivity, the less efficient the battery will be. Hemp-based batteries showed extremely good conductivity.
· TemperatureResistance: The conductivity of hemp batteries remains high even in hot and cold temperatures according to the original study on hemp-based batteries. This is especially important when considering that this technology could one day find itself in vehicles that need to function in searing summer heat as well as icy winter weather.
Is there anything hemp can’t do? We’d like to think there’s nothing hemp can’t do. Simply put, hemp has been the past, present and is definitely the future.

Following the wild success of delta 8 THC as a legal alternative to the more controlled availability of delta 9 THC, the cannabis industry has sought other less-known cannabinoids to compete in the diverse cannabis marketplace.
One of the newest and most promising is hexahydrocannabinol, usually shortened to HHC.
What is HHC?
C21H32O2
HHC is a THC relative long known to science, but until recently not often discussed by cannabis users.
HHC is a minor cannabinoid; it occurs naturally in cannabis, but in amounts too small to make extraction cost-effective. Since commercial production of HHC is just getting off the ground, it’s still not widely known.
Most cannabinoids can be converted to other cannabinoids by altering the chemistry of the molecules. Like delta 8 THC and delta 10 THC, commercial HHC is made from hemp-derived CBD in a lab through chemical processes. HHC has one major legal advantage over delta 8 and delta 10: it isn’t called THC.
TRĒ House HHC Gummies
The high-potency TRĒ house HHC gummies contain 25 mg of HHC per serving, for a total of 500 mg per pack of 20. They offer HHC’s signature euphoric and energetic high and come in a delicious and refreshing strawberry burst flavor. Go easy on them because, as TRĒ House say, “you *will* feel it”.
Hydrogenation modifies the structure of delta 9 THC by replacing a double bond with two hydrogen atoms, which changes its molecular weight and also makes it more stable. According to Mark Scialdone, a chemist and BR Brands Chief Science Officer, hydrogenation improves “stability and resistance to thermo-oxidative breakdown”—which means HHC has a longer shelf life and is less prone to damage caused by UV light and heat.
Does HHC get you high? Does it have side effects?
This is kind of tricky. Although HHC isn’t technically a THC, it does produce similar effects—if you use enough of it. When it’s produced in the lab, an HHC batch is a mix of active and inactive HHC molecules. The active HHC binds well with your body’s cannabinoid receptors; the others don’t.
Manufacturers haven’t yet figured out a cost-effective way to separate high-potency HHC from its low-potency twin, so commercial HHC—which is a mix of the two forms—may be something of a crapshoot for the buyer. But HHC does have noticeable effects. Reports from users generally describe the HHC high as being somewhere between delta 8 and delta 9 THC.
Pretty much everything we know about HHC’s effects and side effects is anecdotal. That said, users report the same set of side effects familiar to delta 9 THC users: anxiety and paranoia, dry mouth, dry and red eyes, hunger, and insomnia.
Will HHC show up in a drug test?
It appears that HHC may not break down in the body in the same way as THC. Unlike the delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 forms of THC, there is some evidence that HHC doesn’t metabolize into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is the breakdown substance many drug panels test for.
But that hasn’t been studied and isn’t certain. So far, no one knows for sure that HHC won’t leave evidence of use in your blood, urine or hair. If your employer tests for drug use, we suggest you not risk your job by using HHC.
Does HHC have medical benefits?
HHC hasn’t been widely studied, unlike more abundant cannabinoids like delta 9 THC or CBD, but there has been some promising research. A 2011 study showed that some synthetic analogs of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) “strongly inhibited breast cancer cell-induced angiogenesis and tumor growth.” Japanese researchers published a paper in 2007 describing HHC’s impressive pain-blocking capability in mice. But it is probably too early to say whether HHC has great promise as a therapeutic drug.
Is HHC legal and will it stay legal?
The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized the hemp plant and all its derivatives, unless the plant or anything made from it contains delta 9 THC at a concentration higher than 0.3 percent. HHC technically isn’t THC at all, so it should skirt federal scrutiny—right? Maybe.
Even though HHC is found naturally in the cannabis plant, that’s not where commercial HHC comes from. It’s a lab-produced product made by hydrogenating hemp-derived cannabinoids under pressure with a catalyst like palladium. Scientists at the National Cannabis Industry Association call the result a “semi-synthetic” cannabis compound.
That could mean HHC will get the attention of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). A cannabinoid expert at biotech company Creo thinks HHC falls under the Federal Analogue Act, which automatically classifies analogs of Schedule 1 drugs as Schedule 1 drugs themselves. If the DEA agrees, HHC could have a very short commercial heyday.
HHC could be banned by states too. This is likely if HHC becomes popular, and especially if it threatens the legal cannabis market, as we’ve seen happen with delta 8 THC. But so far HHC is probably too niche to catch the eye of state lawmakers.
