Hempcrete Builds Momentum in Certification by International Building Code Council in March 2022

Las Vegas, NV, Feb. 22, 2022, The dream green building material for many building professionals may be one step closer to being certified as one of the United States’ national building materials in the US building codes, as reported that hempcrete was submitted as an appendix in the International Residential Codes (IRC) last month by the US Hemp Building Foundation.

The International Code Council experts are set to evaluate the paperwork submitted in March 2022 and then again in September 2022.

Once accepted, hempcrete will be an approved natural building material in the United States.

According to the news source, once hempcrete is approved or certified as a national building material, the material will be “accessible to the standard person to construct with” and “allow you to build with it without needing an alternative material variance.”

Certification of hempcrete will ultimately help permitting departments gain more familiarity with the material which is new to many since legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill, especially since it has a big barrier.

The barrier?

Many building professionals aren’t familiar with it or think it’s a substitution for concrete or think it’s something to get high on.

Yes, it’s a green dream to some but still unknown to others. And then there are the states that make getting a permit for hemp a bit tricky.

Since “no national guidelines, test methods or specifications for hempcrete exist” and building codes differ across the board, approval “depends on whether local officials embrace innovation”.

The US Hemp Building Association has been trying to establish “best practices and rules for acceptance” by the IRC and many are optimistic that new hempcrete codes will spark a “groundswell of interest”.

This shouldn’t be too hard with all the benefits hempcrete offers.

The insulation material “resists mold, fire and pests” and practically lasts forever.

Not to mention, it absorbs carbon.

One source noted that “hempcrete, the non-structural insulation made of hemp hurd (shiv) and lime binder, provides a superior insulation product when installed up to 1 foot thick in wall assemblies.

The material is vapor-permeable, thermally regulating, fire resistant and repels mold and pests.

Hempcrete insulation is carbon negative due to the large amounts of carbon sequestered by the hemp plant via photosynthesis while growing.

” The building industry is very “traditional” and doesn’t see many “new” materials.

Most of the materials used in the building industry have remained the same for years and those same materials have some negative environmental and health impacts.

Hempcrete, on the other hand, is not only sustainable and green, but it also makes ecological and financial sense.

It’s favorable in many ways so when the IRC enshrines hempcrete as a certified natural building material later this year, the potential for the building industry could be huge.

To date, few farmers in this country grow hemp strictly for building purposes.

It’s mostly grown for CBD, bioplastics, food, or even mulch. One generally doesn’t see it grown specifically for hempcrete.

And farmers need “reliable customers and economies of scale” and to be in close proximity to a processing center or they’ll pay exorbitant prices for shipping.

Builders that do use it now, generally can’t get enough locally so they have to import it from overseas and the quality varies.

With the industrial hemp market growing exponentially, resources and contacts are invaluable.

The industrial hemp market is expected to reach $12.01 billion by 2028

and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.2% from 2021 to 2028,

The professional association representing the US hemp building industry moved forward to certify hemp and lime (hempcrete) insulation in US building codes this month. Hempcrete was submitted as an appendix in the International Residential Codes on Jan. 10 by the US Hemp Building Foundation, the non-profit arm of the US Hemp Building Association.

The idea is to give U.S. building permitting departments a familiarity with the material, which is new to the United States after hemp was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill. “These documents will show a pathway for using hempcrete as a building material,” USHBA President Jacob Waddell told Let’s Talk Hemp. “The goal is to allow you to build with hempcrete without needing an alternative material variance,” he added. An international committee of hemp building experts and advocates prepared the paperwork to submit to the International Code Council. IRC code experts will evaluate the paperwork in March and again in September to enshrine hemp + lime as an approved natural building material.

Eventually, inclusion in the IRC should “allow for hempcrete to be accessible to the standard person to construct with it,” Waddell said. Used Widely in Europe The US building industry has some catching up to do when it comes to the international use of hemp in building materials. Hempcrete has been employed as a carbon-negative insulation for 30 years in Europe, as an insulating construction material for large department stores in the United Kingdom and multistory residential buildings and public facilities in France. Patchwork of US Building Departments Right now in the United States, builders, engineers and architects who want to use hempcrete must gain approval project-by-project in the absence of an overarching national code to point to, said Texas-based developer Ray Kaderli, of the Hemp Build Network. Kaderli’s company was just permitted by the city of San Antonio to build a hempcrete-insulated three-bedroom/two-bath 1,300 sq. ft. home. Kaderli, a member of USHBA, praised the organization for moving forward with certification for hempcrete. “With a new industry there are many things to do,” Kaderli said in an email. “This was one of the most important first steps. I’m grateful [USHBA] had the insight and discipline to focus in this direction.”

The certification process also leads the way to apply to certify hempcrete in the International Building Codes for commercial buildings in 2024, when the next application process begins, USHBA president Waddell said. The material still needs to pass various ASTM fire tests as well as tests for structural bracing, Waddell said, for which the foundation will continue to raise funds. Straw Bale Builders Paved the Way USHBA hired engineering and natural building consultants, including two straw bale construction pioneers who helped get straw bale construction certified in the US residential building codes in the early 2000s. About two dozen hemp-building experts worked on the IRC submission for countless hours since October, Waddell said.

Right now, the application submitted to the IRC only includes one-story structures to be insulated with hempcrete wall assemblies without extra engineering. This is a start that will be built upon to expand hempcrete’s role in the building codes, as more data and research is submitted and approved, Waddell said. “Submitting to the IRC is just the first step in a very long process to get hempcrete where we’re able to use it more readily,” Waddell said.

The USHBA has about 200 active members and raised about $50,000 through its foundation for certification expenses and a series of other projects, including workforce development and creating educational materials, Waddell said. The organization will host a members-only online event on Saturday, Jan. 30, where more information about the IRC certification will be shared. 6,000-sq. ft Hemp Home Befuddled Permit Officials

The Massachusetts building permit official who approved one of last year’s largest hempcrete projects built on US soil last year, was initially confused at the rough inspection of the Cape Cod Hemp House, said Mary Dempsey, of Mpactful Ventures.

“The building inspector took one look and said, ‘Wait a minute, where’s your plywood?’ Then he muttered, ‘I gotta go study these plans better,’” she told Let’s Talk Hemp. Even though the Cape Cod Hemp House relied on engineering approval and didn’t have difficulty getting a permit, Dempsey said including hempcrete in the IRC codes will help local building permitting authorities better understand how it works and what it can and cannot do.

Hempcrete will figure into the construction of eco-friendly homes and buildings.

Mpactful Ventures and Dempsey helped steer the USHBA study group to gather the paperwork and research together to submit to the IRC. “People from all over the world were helping by reading this [document] to hopefully move an entire industry forward,” Dempsey said. “I’m really proud to have been part of it.” This article also appeared in HempBuild Magazine.

Is It Possible to Reach Carbon Negativity?

It is possible to reach carbon negativity — but it will take a coordinated effort to reduce emissions from their source and a significant number of offsets to get there.

One of the best ways to realistically reach carbon negativity is to employ different methods of carbon reduction to complement lowering emissions from the source. These include nature-based solutions, enhanced nature solutions, and direct air carbon capture — all of which can be done directly by companies, or through offsetting projects, which is typically easier and more verifiable.

It takes effort, a coordinated approach, and conscious investment — both of money and time — to reach true carbon negativity. But it is possible, as some major brands and corporations are proclaiming they will reach this goal as early as 2030.

How Can Companies and Individuals Reach Carbon Negative Goals?

There are many simple and practical ways for people and companies to get within striking distance of being carbon negative. From there, it is up to them to make the extra effort to achieve this status associated with offsetting more carbon than they emit.

First things first, make sure all energy used in direct operations comes from renewables or other carbon-free sources, such as nuclear. This applies to company activities that directly use energy and individual activities that use energy within the home.

Next, it is imperative to reduce indirect emissions as much as possible. For a company, this can be done by reviewing a supply chain to find suppliers and logistics that create less emissions or by limiting employee Scope 3 emissions, such as those attributable to commuting to and from work. For individuals, this can be done by making smart choices outside the home, from riding that bike to eating that locally grown food.

Lastly, after you’ve tallied up the total carbon footprint for yourself or your company, invest in more offsets than the amount of carbon emitted. It is important to ensure that the offsets you purchase are verified and of good quality, ideally with co-benefits for nature and communities in areas that they are generated. Remember: one credit typically equals 1 metric ton of carbon removed from the atmosphere — you just need to buy one more credit than tons you’ve emitted to reach carbon negative status.

BOISE — Amid years of historic drought and a push for more sustainable resources to lower carbon emissions, industrial hemp legalization may have come along at just the right time for Idaho agriculture. Licensed handlers are allowed to process raw hemp materials into other materials, but they can’t grow the crop.

Hemp is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated crops in modern human history, but it only became legal to grow in Idaho last year. Farmers are beginning to receive licenses from the state to produce and handle the crop during this growing season for commodities such as insulation, paper, oil and food products.

Thanks to House Bill No. 26 passing in Idaho’s April 2021 legislature, with an emergency clause that made the law effective as soon as it passed both chambers of the Legislature, approved farmers are now receiving their hemp licenses so that they can legally “produce and handle the crop during this growing season for commodities such as insulation, paper, oil and food products.” According to the news source, Idaho took a very “methodical and diligent approach” to what it would mean for the state to legalize the crop. Idaho Farm Bureau’s deputy government affairs director, Braden Jensen, said the Bureau has been “pushing for the policy change for the better part of the past 20 years, but the 2018 Federal Farm Bill that removed hemp from the controlled substances list made the issue a priority in the 2021 legislative session.” Idaho now has two licensing options for its farmers (handlers and producers). Both licenses will require a background check on its owner that has to be renewed annually and producers will have their hemp lots tested for acceptable levels of THC (below 0.3%). If any sample of the lot tests higher than this threshold, the entire crop will either be destroyed or blended with a different strain to lower the THC amount. The news source said the state had about 60 applications in November of 2021 and as of today, 8 have been fully granted (4 handlers, 3 producers, 1 handler/producer). If you do not know what insomnia is, it is a problem that inhibits the ability to fall asleep quickly or to maintain a healthy, undisturbed sleep through the night. What the Best Hemp Manufacturers Have Learned from the Wine Industry

Any experienced wine aficionado can tell with one sip the geographic area where the grapes used to create a wine were grown. Wine inherits characteristics from the soil where the grapes were grown, the climate of the site that produced it, and the practices of the winemaker. There are currently 252 AVAs in 33 states across the country.

As grape cultivation and winemaking increased across the United States over the past 50 years, smaller wineries began producing more wines from locally grown varietals.

Today, there are wineries in all 50 states, and more parts of the country are developing their own “wine countries.”

What was once considered a solely New York state or California industry has expanded to include Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Colorado.

Colorado now touts more than 130 licensed wineries and nearly 1,000 acres of vineyards producing more than 150,000 cases of wine a year.

A lthough the burgeoning hemp and CBD industry in the United States has not yet reached this level of sophistication, there is every indication it is evolving in that direction.

the High Rockies of Colorado are ideal for creating some of the finest terpene profiles in the cannabis or the hemp plant.

For both wine and hemp, small-batch producers make the most desired and highest-quality products on the market.

While CBD available at any roadside gas station or convenience store may have become commonplace, true connoisseurs of craft products crave uniqueness and attention to quality.

American Viticultural Areas

When a U.S. winery wants to tell you the geographic pedigree of its wine, it uses a tag on its label called an Appellation of Origin. Appellations are defined either by political boundaries, such as the name of a county, state or country, or by federally-recognized regions called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).

In order for a wine to be designated with an Appellation of Origin defined by a political boundary, such as a county name for example, federal law requires that 75 percent or more of grapes used to make the wine be from that appellation, and that the wine be fully finished within the state in which the county is located. A wine bearing “California” as an Appellation of Origin must, under state law, be made with 100% grapes that were grown and finished in the Golden State. If a wine is designated with the name of an American Viticultural Area (AVA), federal regulations require that 85 percent or more of the wine is derived from grapes grown within the boundaries of that TTB-established AVA and that the wine is fully finished within the state or one of the states in which the AVA is located. Certain states have stricter standards for use of the name of an Appellation/AVA on wine labels.

Thailand: Plans To Legalize Cannabis Consumption, Carrying And Home-Cultivation In 2022

The Ministry of Public Health of Thailand stated that it will push for the legalization of cannabis in 2022.

As reported by the Bangkok Post, the country had already removed cannabis stems and branches from its list

of category 5 narcotic substances but kept flowers and buds.

However, the new Narcotics Code, which came into force last Thursday, no longer includes cannabis and hemp.

According to the Thai newspaper, Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul outlined the next goals in the regulation of the plant: “What we have achieved so far is to declare that cannabis stems, roots, and leaves are not drugs. Starting next year, we will remove everything – stems, roots, leaves, buds, flowers, and seeds – from the list of narcotic drugs.”

Cannabis And Hemp in Thailand the only exception to the new rule is that CBD extracts with a THC percentage higher than 0.2% will not be allowed.

Charnvirakul justified this by saying that “the figure has not been set unilaterally by Thailand. It is the standard of the World Health Organization.”

In the meantime, once the new narcotics schedule comes into effect, all cannabis-derived products (such as oil, soap, cosmetics, and supplements, which normally have less than 0.2% THC) will be authorized in the country.

The objective behind the relaxation of cannabis regulations is to stimulate the economy, agricultural tourism, and encourage people to grow and process cannabis to supplement their income.

Thus, residents of the country who wish to grow cannabis at home will be able to do so without quantity restrictions.

The only requirement is to obtain permission from local authorities before doing so.

The use of recreational cannabis in Thailand is illegal but cultivating it and using it for medical purposes is permitted, thanks to recent governmental policy updates. Here’s a look at how Thailand’s marijuana laws have evolved.

Marijuana in Thailand: a brief legal history

In the 1930s, as many countries around the world began regulating marijuana usage, Thailand got on board as well. In 1935 Thailand’s government passed the Cannabis Act, criminalizing the possession, sale, and use of the substance. In 1979, Thailand cracked down even further passing the Narcotics Act of B.E.2522 which ranked cannabis as a Category 5 drug. With the Thailand government’s strict drug penalization policies, this meant getting caught with large doses of marijuana could result in the death sentence!

Thailand’s weed laws remained unchanged until 2019 when the World Health Organization (WHO) changed weed’s classification from a Schedule IV to Schedule 1 ranking due to “evidence that some cannabis-based preparations have a medical use.”

Inquirer.net reported on how Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to loosen its weed laws in turn with the passage of Narcotics Act (No. 7) B.E. 2562, which officially legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

In January 2021, Thailand continued to loosen medical marijuana restrictions, legalizing the sale of food and cosmetics products containing cannabis leaves, stems, stalks, and roots.

Thai sentiment toward marijuana

Cannabis, or Ganga as it is locally called, was once a major part of Thai people’s lives. Women used it to ease labor pains and men used it to ease back pains after a long day of physical labor. The hemp plant was also commonly used to season cooking and for the creation of locally worn fabrics.

Today, with the new legalization of hemp products, cafes and restaurants such as S AM ARE, GTG Cafe and Kiew Kai Ka Cafe use CBD in their cuisine. Weed-loving visitors will be happy to find a wide range of cannabis-infused foods including omelets, salads, ice milk tea, cookies, and croissants, to name a few.

As for local sentiment towards its recreational use, a recent survey of 700 residents in Greater Bangkok, aged 20 to 59, revealed that over 64% are willing to try products containing low levels of THC Nikkei Research reported.

Recreational use: is marijuana legal in Thailand?

No, recreational marijuana is still illegal. Thanks to its heavy tourism industry, however, smoking weed in Thailand is a common sight on the beaches of Koh Phangan and Pai as well as in rasta bars. In city centers like Bangkok and Phuket however, you are far more likely to get caught and face criminal charges.

What are the penalties for cannabis possession in Thailand?

Like many countries in Asia, Thailand has strict drug laws. Possession of 10 kg or more of marijuana with an intent to sell it can result in a 15 years prison sentence and a fine of 1.5 million baht (~USD$45,000). Getting caught with a small amount of marijuana for recreational usage can result in confiscation and fines, as well as dealing with the hassle of the local police, as many Reddit users warned.

What are Thailand’s policies on medical cannabis and CBD-based products?

Thailand is at the forefront of the South-Eastern Asia medical marijuana front. On May 11, 2021 the country opened two full-time clinics dispensing cannabis oil for medical treatment.

Additionally, Thailand has several government agencies and state-registered agricultural community programs for the cultivation and possession of cannabis. Hemp-based products with under .2% THC are legal.

To help locally source hemp production, as well as generate increased local revenue, Thailand’s new prime minister passed legislation allowing households to grow up to 6 cannabis plants each, as reported by Bloomberg News. Similar to EU policies, Thai-grown cannabis plants must contain less than .2% THC, and be sold to the country’s medical facilities.

Thailand residents with approved health conditions can get a prescription from their doctor for marijuana use. Visitors wishing to bring in their medical marijuana may do so as well upon presenting their doctor’s prescription.
